Driven by this park a million times, always wondering " what's back there?". Well, today was the day we decided to investigate. So we pulled up on a late summer Sunday morning and headed south on the trails. We hiked the Rifle Range Salmon Trail, which is somewhat hilly- but only moderately strenuous. At some point, we ended up on the White Trail; we followed that all the way down to the banks of the Irondequoit Creek. According to my " Map My Walk" app, it was just a little over a mile to the creek from the trailhead. Along the way, we saw some very nice views of the marshes which border the park to the west. At one point we saw a majestic looking Cormerant perched on a lonely tree overlooking the water. It was a nice, peaceful, scene. On our trip back to the trailhead we followed the " Rifle Range" trail. A note of caution: sections of the Rifle Range trail are somewhat overgrown and there's a fair amount of brush and vegetation obscuring the path, but nothing that makes seeing the trail difficult. It was neat to come across the remnants of the old New York National Guard Rifle Range. There's a restored observation station and split rail fence that mark where the range once stood, a short distance to the north are some ancient looking concrete stairs and crumbling brick pillars where a gate was located. After passing the old range, the trail flattens and intersects with a much wider path which ends at the trailhead. Overall, this was a scenic, interesting, and worthwhile hike. We enjoyed ourselves and will surely return. Furthermore, I would recommend this trail for families with younger hikers and also suitable for...

It was quite hilly and full of tree roots, as well as a few fallen trees across the trail. It was also very buggy, though mostly just gnats (I should have anticipated that). I found I agree with ChatGPT that the "most intriguing feature being the remnants of a rifle and pistol range used by both the National Guard and State Police around WWII." The military sites are fascinating, and it would be great to have background info posted or QR Codes. There is one at the facility that's labeled as a "gazebo" on the Monroe County map, which was restored in 2014 as an Eagle Scout Project. It was originally a lookout for the military exercises, and now needs further TLC (permanent benches would be nice; there are just old plastic lawn chairs and several of them are broken). The other sites could really use Eagle Scout or other maintenance projects, too! They all have plenty of debris (including a sizable plastic tub!) and are quite overgrown, understandably. A diamond...
Β Β Β Read moreThis is an interesting park.it has an easy lower trail that is quite level as it is a service road. But parallel to it is the hilly terrain loaded with trails that go up and down and will take along the eastern perimeter of the park. The hills aren't to large or steep, just right for a nice workout. I'm 60 with a knee decidedly lacking in cartilage and I didn't have any real problems hiking the rim. It is a good workout. The scenery is beautiful. And in the middle of the woods, in a valley between the hills is an old rifle range. I would love to see pictures of it's former glory as the various concrete stairways and the target troughs give an idea of what once was an interesting place in...
