I did not intend to visit Cayuga Ridge Estate, but I had time to kill before my next tasting reservation, and Thirsty Owl and Sheldrake Point had no openings available. So I tried out CRE, to my great regret. First bad sign: the tasting included a couple of fruit wines (non-grape) that were, according to the person who gave me the sheet, "good for making Mimosas". The barn setting for the tasting included a port-a-john toilet in the parking area; mercifully I did not need to wee that badly. The wines were served in the manner of a beer tasting, with four plastic cups in a wooden holder. I had a Chardonnay, the "Chancellor" red, and two Rieslings, one from 2020 and the other from 2016. The Chardonnay tasted of wood that had been charred and then soaked in water until it was rotten. The Chancellor had that awful pseudo-cinnamon harshness associated with unripe fruit and incompetent wine processing. 2020 was a great year for Rieslings, so it speaks volumes that this winery managed to botch that too; both Rieslings were watery and had none of the lovely fruit or mineral aromatics that one would associate with the varietal. I killed as much time as I could, left half the contents of the cups behind, and swore never to return. This is the worst wine I have had in years; CRE is a place designed to cater to the local yokels who have no sense of what constitutes good winemaking, or even...
Read moreAlthough it was somewhat scenic, the experience was poor from the beginning. I waited for about 10 minutes before someone even came up to me to tell they'll have me seated soon. Then, they were out of at least 3 types of wines, and, from over hearing another table out of some beers as well. But I decided to look past it and order a sangria per advice from an employee. To my shock at the end of the meal I find out that it's $45. Coming from other wineries earlier, and then going on to other wineries later, that price was outrageous (normally most would think $25). However all this aside, I then read how they responded to other reviews, and I am no longer surprised at this terrible experience. The fact that they responded by making childish comments and suggesting patrons go to, what in their view, are lesser establishments such as Applebee's or Outback steakhouse, tells me this winery has no idea how to treat customers. Last I checked, the customer is always right, maybe if the owner learned from successful businesses, such as Applebee's and outback steakhouse, as well as the other wineries around this lake, they would receive a...
Read moreThe atmosphere of this winery is so different from all the others! It's in an old hay barn (I didn't notice any smell, which other reviewers had complained about). The wines are good, but the atmosphere of it really makes it worth the visit. They had a nice selection of dry and semi-dry wines and a couple fruit wines. We usually prefer dry wines, but we ended up with a bottle of their cranberry wine, which wasn't overly sweet. They also had the only gewurztraminer that we truly liked. We would have liked to eat at their restaurant, but it wasn't open for...
