This winery has so much potential. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, with a stunning outdoor patio that makes for a perfect afternoon. The wine itself is excellent; we were particularly impressed with the Cabernet and planned to purchase several bottles. Unfortunately, the experience was soured at the very end. About 15 minutes before closing, a staff member announced they would be closing soon. A few minutes later, still within their posted business hours, we went to re-enter the building from the patio to use the restroom and buy wine. We found the only door locked. After we knocked, the same older woman appeared, grumpily asked "yes girls??" and told us to walk down a grassy hill and around to the front to exit. We explained we were leaving but just needed to come inside briefly. She reluctantly let us in but maintained a grumpy, dismissive attitude, telling us to hurry up. We used the restroom but decided against giving them any more of our business. Overall experience: The Cabernet had lovely notes of black currant, but the service had displeasing notes of rudeness, leaving quite a bad after taste. A suggestion for management: please keep patio access open until the official closing time and ensure staff communicate with guests in a more welcoming manner. Allowing customers to make last-minute purchases or use the facilities during business hours should be standard practice. A great product can't make up for...
Read moreI'm not sure what to make of this wine-tasting experience. Just to be clear, I wasn't expecting a high-end Napa-grade winery. I went in with the right expectations. And also I understand that each bottle of wine here is roughly between $20~$30 and their Reserve Cab comes in at around $50.
However, my issue with Duck Walk is that they way open up their tasting room actually deteriorates their value prop and their wine. Duck Walk, despite the size of their winery. produces a whole variety of wine - from rieslings to cabs to malbecs to merlots. And what this does is each variety or wine just doesn't grapple with its own character. Plus the Long Island wind can be sense with type except for a few.
But what's the most disappointing is the way they run their tasting room. You order the 4 you want to drink and they give it to you in plastic cups. Are you kidding me? I understand the convenience but much of these wines need the temperatur of the hand to warm things up. Not sure if folks comes here just to get drunk but certainly they are not giving their wines to be truly "tasted". ' My suggestion for Duck Walk is to focus on a few varieties and compensate for the "sharpness" of all their grapes. The Aphrodite is my favorite and the one that exemplifies the type of grape they have at Long Island. Everything else comes across aggressive or square peg in...
Read moreA great day out with my irresponsible friend!
It sounds as if reading some of the reviews there was a woman working here who was really quite rude. Fortunately, we did not see her at all. We were greeted by a wonderful server who was sweet and funny and kind and helpful and had the most excellent smile! (See photos). This is our annual trip up to visit the vineyards with some friends who have a family home here. We are two couples who have known one another for decades. My partner and my friend’s partner had to work, so it was just the two of us, set loose for the day. Of the four of us, the two who were working are the responsible, well-behaved ones, and me and my friend (who never get to go out on our own) are a bit less disciplined. So we were sent out to get meat and cheese, and Instead, we went to a winery. We explained this to the person serving us, and he was good, natured and sweet and even took photos of us “not at a winery.”
The wine was good. I especially liked some of their sweeter wines, although I’m not typically a sweet wine fan. The reds were not my favorites, but I’m a California -cab born and raised type of gal, so…
Overall, a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. Please pass along our thanks to the employee pictured with...
