On our recent trip out west, we were passing through Tulsa and in my search of things to do nearby, The Outsiders House Museum was one that had excellent reviews. We stopped only for just a minute to walk up to the street level outside the property, viewed from the street and left. We didn't have time to go inside so my review is only from the perspective of walking up to the property. It appeared as what I remember in the Outsiders movie. I noticed a worker greeting guests as they walked up and assisting those who needed assistance into the home. I wished we had more time to go in but that just wasn't the case on this visit. The only negative thing we experienced, which was in no part the actual Outsiders House Museum, but instead were a few of the neighbors who clearly don't want people to be in their neighborhood. For example, one property that was located just next to The Outsiders Museum had No Trespassing signs posted everywhere, had a metal gate wide open obstructing the sidewalk walking up to the Museum so that guest clearly had to either walk in the street or the grassy area. The grassy area was full of dog feces which appeared to be an attempt to detour (or just annoy) guests. It was a miracle no one in our small group stepped in it. The neighbor across the street had a portable sign posted in front of their property, in the actual street, that said NO PARKING. I get it.....I'm sure that it would be annoying to live right next to a place that gets an unusually high amount of visitors but some of the neighbors have taken their protest to a ridiculous level! Why these neighbors have not cleaned up their properties, taken down their signs, created a small parking lot (or even just a few spaces) that would in turn give people a convenient place to park for a small fee INSTEAD of protesting......is beyond...
Read moreWhat can I say that hasn't already been said? This place just keeps getting better and better. I was lucky enough to attend the grand opening of this amazing step back in time house / museum. Danny Boy O'Connor had really put this book /movie back on the map for thousands of kids who are lucky enough to have this in their reading still. He had paid attention to great detail inside and out of the house, and if you are a fan of the book or movie you will not be disappointed. I had to contain myself as I sat directly next to C Thomas Howell (Ponyboy Curtis) and tried not to act like the superfan that I am. Whether it was reciting Robert Frost's poem with him, word for word and just hearing him tell stories that I never knew it was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. I can't thank everyone involved enough, meeting S.E. Hinton and having visited the area twice now, you really get a feel and understanding for the book and the characters a little more. When I was 12 there was no internet and the only thing I knew about Tulsa, OK was what I could read in an encyclopedia, kids today are spoiled damn it. If you ever find yourself in Oklahoma, even if it's in Oklahoma City, take the couple hour ride up to Tulsa and embark on a one of the most amazing stand still in time houses you can find in America. Stay Gold...
Read moreThis location was truly saved by a Philanthropist. One is immediately emersed in the book through the movie settings such as the home of the protagonists. 'The Outsiders' has become one of the most beloved books drawing those who feel conforming to societal norms is simply impossible for themselves from income class to social standing. The young Tulsan, who authored the book, would likely approve of the house as suited to that she vividly placed within her story. The Park setting of the 'Socs' Murder in the adapted movie is immediately down the road. The Gothic, Retro to Deco architecture offered by Tulsa, OK is immediately adjacent. Not 20 minutes away is Owasso, OK; Owasso offers the scenes of the Ice Cream Shop, background Football Stadium, and the setting of the convenience store where 'Dallas' murdered the store clerk, however it is argued a pick-up scene replaces the store on location in Skiatook, OK that is also the setting of the Church sought as a hideout . The Church, a home given a simple Cross, was burned down for the movie. Few realize Tulsa was once one of the wealthiest cities in the world as oil profits flooded the city with ornate buildings to underground passages of Oil Barron's concerned with privacy to...
