If you have been all over Washington DC, then you need to get to Mount Vernon, also. You could ride a bike here on the Mount Vernon Trail, which is about 18 miles from downtown Washington DC. Or, it is also accessible by car, however, not by the metro. It is a little like visiting Williamsburg and that there are many old buildings that are original.
The tour of the mansion is somewhat interesting, but it will not blow you away. However, it is worth a visit to see the tomb werewhere Washington and Martha Washington are buried. It’s incredible to see the life size impressions of him at the various stages of his life. The attention to detail is exquisite. Not enough can be said about him and all he did to father our country. How he walked away from power: twice! Once after the revolution and after his second term as President. Truly a rare example in history that really served to establish our country.
