This is such a beautiful park. It has lots of trees, well manicured grass with rolling hills, two covered areas for picnicking/family gatherings, a volleyball net with sand, two softball fields and children's play areas. Also, if you continue North from the entrance off of Wilson St and drive/walk just a little ways on Butternut Rd, you will find a VERY popular disc golf area with a huge hill to make it a little more challenging and lots of sand. They also have parking there, however, it's kind of rough and needs paving. There is a bathroom building in the park, not porta-pottys which is big plus to those of you who do not like the porta-pottys (I'm included in that dislike lol.) The park also has Kent Trails running alongside and through the park which is nicely paved. You can run, walk or bike the trail. If you continue on Butternut Rd across from the Disc Golf, the Kent Trails takes you right into Millinium Park! Overall, there is plenty of shade where you can rest on benches in the park. If you are a sunshine lover, there is plenty of places you can enjoy that too. I have also noticed plenty of staff there who can help with questions, as well as monitor any activities in the park if necessary. I hope you have found this information helpful and...
Read moreI just had my wedding reception at the enclosed shelter the day before Memorial Day. I got many compliments on the venue from my guests. I appreciated how easy it was to make a reservation. A few days before my event, the park staff called to confirm details. I did let them know I would be at the building when my reservation started to set up, but no one ever came to let me in. I only got in because I was able to figure out their door code. However the men's restroom wasn't unlocked either. Eventually the staff came during the actual reception to check trash cans so we were able to get them to unlock the men's restroom but it was a bit stressful, especially since there isn't any way to get a hold of staff by phone during non-business hours. We even tried calling the main Kent County parks line and connected to their "emergency" line but no one ever got back to us. It all worked out in the end though.
It was too hot got a fire, but the shelter does provide dry firewood if you want to use the fireplace. Small kitchen also with electric stove/oven range and a refrigerator. Nothing fancy but will get...
Read moreJohnson Park is a nice place to run cross country, especially for younger runners. The course is open and easy to see, so parents can keep an eye on their kids from most vantage points.
The course was a bit muddy in some places, even though it had been dry for a few days before the race. This made it difficult for runners to keep their footing.
The parking was very crowded, and it was difficult to find a spot to park. This was especially frustrating for some. Others just jumped the curve :-)
Overall, Johnson Park is a decent place to run cross country, but there are some areas that could be improved.
Recommendation:
I would recommend Johnson Park for cross country events, but I would caution parents to be aware of the muddy conditions and to make sure to use the restrooms before the race. I would also recommend arriving early to ensure a...
