Being a talented skater, someone who travels to different rinks, and a guest at this roller rink and to the state of Connecticut, I found that the energy ran high through the place. The skate floor was very well maintained, smooth ride all the way around. Pricing for the food and drinks were a little high- but I didnât really try any of their food so canât give my two sense there. Looking around at the rental skates (didnât have rentals, as i have my own), they look well kept and maintained well, however some of their brakes on both their quads and blades should be changed as I saw multiple with worn down brakes.
However, the reason why I give this place a rate of 2 is because of their rules, the skate guards and management. From what I hear, the rules vary from session to session. Not allowing any backwards skating, sideline skating, or tricks I get could be a potential safety hazard (Sideline skating however could be debatable as you are still looking forward skating). Also, no hats, hoodies or any baggage was not allowed. I understand why no bags, but hoodies or hats threw me into a loop. The lack of enforcing rules was also a huge concern that I saw, and found unfair. I saw at least 5 skate guards throughout the day, as they were always rotating on the floor and such. But when skate guards themselves are not following these rules, doing tricks, one having his hoodie on himself for about about hour 1/2-2 hours is unacceptable. I saw no skate guard stop to help kids up as they fell, or enforce any other rules, rather they skated by them, sometimes doing tricks. I also found that the major use of cell phones was also a huge concern, as everyone on the floor was making calls, texting and taking pictures while on skates, which causes equal or more concern and safety hazards just as any other rule that was not enforced. There is a DJ booth there, and the DJ and management were the only ones enforcing rules. It seemed almost as the skate guards were there just for liability reasons, incase the place got sued. Being I went with a group of friends, as I never got pulled off the rink, but others did for doing tricks or breaking rules, I find it interesting that other people such as one of the older guys who did tricks never got told once by management to leave the floor, as if they were targeting our group. At the end when we left, as i was still gathering my belongings, the older lady with long grey hair, kinda skinny looked back and waved bye bye in a rudely way with the skate guard. I went up to her after and told her âIâm sorry that others could not follow the rules, but I do not appreciate the fact you were rude and disrespectful to my group, and that you feel the need to show inappropriate gestures to customers who came to visit your rink from an hour 1/2 away, have a nice day.â
Will not go back to this rink anytime too soon, Hopefully I would like to see management become a little bit more respectful, and skate guards actually doing the job as a skate guard, setting the example for other...
Read moreRollerMagic is the best skating rink! The hardwood flooring is so nice to skate on. I love that there is a ring inside the walls of the skating rink itself designed to allow parents to walk with their small children or disabled skaters. They also have special skates for small beginners with what look like extra long brake bumpers that prevent them from falling backward, which allows children to learn safely at a much younger age. The DJs at RollerMagic usually play a really good mix of music so most people can enjoy their time. They decorated very nicely for Christmas too! The food is typical cheaply made overpriced teenage fun food, pizza, nachos, hot dogs, soda, etc. typical to this type of establishment. My family and I LOVE the arcade here! There is a surprisingly large variety of games to choose from. My husband and I played the black and green air hockey table, it was so cool! It has cameras that record your faces be whenever someone scores as well as fans that blew air on that person! We had a lot of fun with that. My son and I prefer to get tickets from Ski Ball. Some of those machines are old and tend to screw up (eat tokens, not spit out tickets,) but the staff is always very nice and reasonable about rectifying any issues brought to their attention. Not only do we skate here every so often, but my son had his 10th birthday party here in November 2018, and let me tell you the value for the money can't be beat anywhere! We chose the Semi Private party package, which included unlimited soda and popcorn, a pizza slice or hot dog for each child, skate or inline rental, a free pass to return for each child, and tokens for each child with double for the birthday boy. It broke down to $18.75 per child, a price which I couldn't find for ANY other activity for that many children with that much stuff included ANYWHERE else. One thing I did NOT like was that the free passes had to be used within 30 days. I have nieces and nephews who live out of state and would have loved to save their passes for school vacation when they visit, so I think they could change that maybe to expire in 6 months or a year. Overall I have only that one negative thing to say, my family and I love RollerMagic and we're so happy we live close enough to...
Read moreIâm writing this review so that people in my community can stay safe, because unfortunately I was not safe here as a trans person.
Iâm going to preempt this recounting with some information about myself. I am Transgender. I have had top surgery and been on testosterone. I feel unsafe in womenâs spaces because I have been yelled at and assaulted for trying to go to the womenâs bathroom, even before transitioning I have faced violence in womenâs spaces.
I used to go to roller magic all the time, every week with my friends; until Halloween when we showed up for a costume party. This night they had security out front and asked people to form into two lines based on âsexâ I assumed that the safe line for me to go into was the menâs due to my flat chest and low voice. Well I guess I was wrong because the security guy threw a fit about how Iâm a âfemaleâ (yelling this very loudly mind you) and insisting that I go into the womenâs line. It was humiliating. I asked him to just search me and not make a scene, but clearly he was uncomfortable with the fact that Iâm transgender. I left. I did not get in that night because Iâm trans. A friend of mine told me that they spoke with the owner who said if it happens again, that I can use the side door to enter the buildingâŚwhy donât you just go ahead and make trans person water fountains too while youâre at it, roller magic? I spoke with him on the phone the next day and he refused to fire the security service that discriminated against me. Argued with me and again told me to use the side door. Iâm beyond disgusted. Years later this has still stuck with me. Donât give these people your money. IF YOU ARE TRANSGENDER YOUâRE...
