This geyser is a better experience than Old Faithful. First, you are way closer to the geyser itself when it erupts. Second, it is just as tall if not taller than Old Faithful. Third, it erupts for what seemed like longer than Old Faithful. Fourth, it makes an amazing hissing sound from a steam vent to the side of the geyser making for a much more interesting experience than Old Faithful overall. The window of time was from 11am to 1:30pm and it went off very close to 1:30pm. We did hear reports of others waiting up to three hours AFTER the designated window but it was still worth it. This goes off every 7 hours or so, so plan accordingly. Also, in the summer the benches are HOT. We found a place in the shade sitting on the boardwalk on the periphery and it was much more comfortable. It was worth the 3 hour wait. Also, it is very easy to see all of the surrounding geysers and then just run up to it when its erupting. You will be able to see it for about 1/4th of a mile and then saunter over to it when it is erupting which lasts around 7 minutes. There is a lot to explore in the area on...
Read moreIt was one of the clearest evenings I have experienced in Yellowstone this summer and I brought a group of about 20 friends to watch Grand. May people were their taking time exposures and you could easily see the Milky Way and the stars. A Korean group spoiled the exposures of a lot of people as they used a high power light in the geyser. I don’t think it was intentional, but it did ruin a lot of photographers work, and they did not seem to understand the people asking them to turn off the light. You have to wait up to two to fours hours within the window for the Geyser to go off. They left after the first part of the event, and most could see it without light interference during the second part of the event it...
Read moreThe Grand Geyser lives up to it's name. Although a lil shower to start than Old Faithful, this geyser is said to reach taller heights. It's not a 'singular structured' geyser like Old Faithful so it might not initially look like it but it spouts way into the sky. It ebbs and slows off and on for 20+mins. And in the right sunlight, the rainbows and prismic colors gleam. Funny lil moment - The clip (which doesn't do it justice) I've added is the end of a 2+min video. The spectators were all silently watching mesmerized... out of no a ~10yr old kid says "That's disappointing" as we all laugh....
