We visited the Rockford Tower in early Spring 2024. The Rockford Tower was not open at that time. It is a beautiful place, Built between 1899 and 1902, the half-million-gallon water storage tank and observatory is constructed of natural field stone. You are able to see the Brandywine River, Dogs are welcome. There are concerts and other events starting late spring through the Fall. From the Tower, you can hike down to the Brandywine River. It’s family friendly, an inexpensive way to connect with nature and spend time with family and friends, or a date /meetup. Parking is free. Be sure you put this on your itinerary when visiting the City of Wilmington.

A stunningly beautiful park at the northwest edge of Wilmington, DE. And at the heart of this park stands this wonderful 115' fieldstone tower that serves as an observation deck and water cistern for the community. The Rockford Tower was constructed between 1899 and 1902 and is breathtaking to behold. Her details are many and artfully executed... her "gargoyle" water drains, her "archers cut" windows, and her sundial that is rendered ineffective by lovely trees that deserve to be there are among the joys. She is currently under some renovation work, and I was unable to enter, but what a visit nonetheless.

This is one seriously cool tower! Can't believe I've lived here my whole life and never visited the tower. It looks like something medieval with huge blue rock stones and large ornate door. At first you think there's a very unique clock on the side until you realize it's a huge sundial! Look way up at the top. Yes, those are little gargoyles! The surrounding area has great hiking hills dotted with little caves between huge boulders, massive and dramatic trees and a beautiful park surrounded by old immaculately kept mansions. can't wait to go back when it's open and see the inside

The construction of the Rockford Tower during the Industrial Revolution reflects Wilmington’s dedication to meeting both the utilitarian and decorative needs of the city’s rapidly expanding population. The Tower has since become a timeless symbol for urban reform movements that immensely improved the quality of life for the city’s residents.

During the 19th century, mills and quarries lined the banks of Brandywine Creek. The workers’ homes were often built next to their places of employment. Imagine living and working where the air was permeated with dust, unpleasant odors and loud noise. As industrialization continued, city officials looked for ways to improve the health of those living in overcrowded conditions. Throughout the nation, other cities were going through similar challenges. The solution was the national public parks movement, which created green spaces close to the working class to improve their health and...
