This is an out and back trail that was approximately 5 miles one way. It appears that they are trying to extend the trail and on Google Maps it shows it going much further west than it actually does. That is the dashed section seen on Google Maps. Their website shows some sections that they are trying to obtain access to. Once in Sewanee the trail ends even though it looks like it continues as Perimeter Trail (marked that way along the other section too). Once you cross Sherwood Road (56) there is a steel gate with a sign indicating that it is not accessible by the public so we turned around at that point. This trail is primarily concrete and asphalt and has a couple of wood decking sections. There are some elevation changes but relatively flat. The road crossings are well marked with stop signs and signs to look both directions. Some places along the way that you can easily get to allowing you to eat as part of your trip.

I was very disappointed, and want to make everyone aware that most of the trail viewable on Google maps, the mountain goat website map, AllTrails, etc. are CLOSED, gated privately owned roads and not accessible to the public. The existing portion of the trail is okay. It's totally flat, paved, and in good condition. Only about 1.5 miles is secluded, the remainder runs parallel to Highway 41A so most of it's fairly boring and not at all peaceful with traffic. Because all the maps show the trail, I was under the impression you could hike from Sewanee, through Hawkins Cove, to Cowan. You can't (at least not legally.) It's blocked with gates and no trespassing signs on both ends (Cowin and Sewanee).

Solid 9+ mile running option - out and back. With just a few, low traffic road crossings, and only slight inclines and declines - it is a good, asphalt covered rail bed about half way and then an asphalt sidewalk by the road. My GPS put the trail at closer to 4.7 miles than the advertised 5 miles - I measured it from the parking area at Hawkins Lane to the parking lot at Mountain Outfitters. You can add about one more mile via the sidewalks through Sewanee. One less star as there are no restroom...
