Little Shop of Horrors
Earlier this week I posted a review of a show my wife and I saw in a black box theater in Winston Salem. This review is for a show at the Little Theater of Winston Salem, which is a much larger venue that can handle larger casts and set. Believe it or not I had never seen "LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS", so we decided that it was time for me to join the rest of you and see this classic from the 80s.
DO NOT MISS THIS PERFORMANCE. IT IS A MUSICAL ADAPTATION OF THE MOVIE WITH A SUPERB CAST FABULOUS VOICES. I
The trio of Reagan Hailey as Chiffon, Morrissia Ravenell as Crystal, and Leslie Roberts as Ronette sing throughout the production and all have voices made for Broadway. They sang the opening number and the audience did not want them to stop. I wanted to give them a standing ovation. Every time they came on stage we all were in awe.
Martha Merritt, plays Aubrey. She brought her character to life. He voice is angelic. The audience loved Aubrey but we also wanted hug her, and shake her say you deserve more than the creep you're dating.
Nathan Sebens as Seymour does a superior performance. Nathan brought Seymour to life. Martha and Nathan have great chemistry. The audience was rooting for them throughout the show.
The scene stealer was Daniel Becker who portrays Orin Scrivello, DDS. His students at Atkinson High School are fortunate to have such a talented professional teaching them. As I am writing this, I am thinking that his wife Caitlyn must be a Saint if she has to live with someone who can "act" like Daniel. He is a comedic talent that doesn't come along all that often.
Carlos Nieto as Mr. Mushnick and Ralph Shaw, as Audrey II deserve special mention for their performance. Both, Carlos and Ralph are integral to the show and are fabulous in their roles.
Bill Davis, Derrick Harley, Lydia Hudgens, Angela Huie, and Gabriel Jensen round out the cast, taking on various ensemble roles. This cast was amazing.

Read moreLast week I watched Ma Rainey, the latest of many many shows I've seen here since 2019. First off, this season has been the best so far. Agatha Christie was brilliantly acted and directed. Little Shop made me laugh, cry and cheer. The vocals were great, the direction was clever and it was perfectly cast. Everything this year has been superb-even a tired old chestnut like Christmas Carol was fresh and entertaining. Ma Rainey was good, but 3 to 3.5 hours is far too long for that show. However, it was still enjoyable.
In my opinion, Little Theatre is by far better than any theatre you will find in Charlotte or Asheville and gives the professional theatres in Raleigh a run for their money as well. I don't believe the average person realizes what a gem they have in Winston- Salem.
The acting and directing are almost always on point. Even if they aren't on point, they are at least interesting and entertaining. I always feel like the commitment to good acting and artistic vision is worth the price of each ticket.
The set and scene design is second to none in the area. Holy sweet mother of Baby Jesus. Who is your scene designer/builder? They are brilliant. This is especially true considering this is a community theatre.
The atmosphere is comfortable, not too warm or cold and the volunteers and staff are delightful. I do wish there was a wider selection of drinks, but that is a trifleing issue and I know alcohol licenses are expensive.
I do wish that your shows ran a bit longer than two weeks, but again, this is minor and I'm sure it factors into the business side.
It seems Little Theatre has a strong community following and I always feel like I am watching at home with family. Whatever you are doing, I hope you continue to do it, grow and prosper. Little Theatre is the best in the Triad and the evidence is in...
Read moreWent to the Little Theatre of WS at the HanesBrand Theatre this past weekend to see the play Ma Rainey. Located in the heart of downtown you can conveniently grab a bite to eat and walk to the theatre after. There is $5.00 paid parking diagonally across the street. There is a door greeter as soon as you walk up. The lobby is small and cozy with restrooms and a small concession stand for drinks and snacks, including wine. Tickets to their events can be purchased ahead or at the door, but some events sell out quickly. The staff is friendly and direct you to your seats. As for this play, it was both funny and emotional and really made you think about people and their past trauma and emotions. The seats were comfortable but can be noisy when someone gets up during the show to use the restrooms. The production itself was on point and entertaining. I will definitely continue to frequent them and catch other shows. Definitely an...
