Apple River Fort State Historic Site: The historian, Elizabeth, who staffs the visitor center is quite knowledgeable about the history of this area and is broadly expert in all things regarding midwest Native Americans including the Indian mounds, Blackhawk Wars, etc. She pointed us to additional resources for additional research. Read moreA fun little stop I've been to many times over the years. I used to take my kid here all the time. You do have to walk about a quarter mile to get there, but the trail is a lot faster than you'd expect and in the shade if you go in the summer and there are times when you can drive up the rode. Unfortunately, the fort is no longer quite as fun to explore if there isn't an active event going on, since the ladders to get on the lookout platforms have been removed and all of the little rooms were locked last time...
