This was a neat stop on our trip to the Galena area. The museum had very informative displays and some artifacts, as well as some gift shop items for sale. The building was clean and staff was very friendly. The walk to the site was clean and pleasant. The fort itself was in good repair. The prairie reconstruction area was pretty.

Not much here but the history is gives is awesome if you do a little research on the importance of the fort and the area. Gives a real good view of how tough it was for the men and women and children that were there.

Apple River Fort State Historic Site: The historian, Elizabeth, who staffs the visitor center is quite knowledgeable about the history of this area and is broadly expert in all things regarding midwest Native Americans including the Indian mounds, Blackhawk Wars, etc. She pointed us to additional resources for additional research. We could have talked with her for hours. She is a gem and a highlight of our entire northwest Illinois experience. The short video is worth watching. We visited during the second week of...

A fun little stop I've been to many times over the years. I used to take my kid here all the time. You do have to walk about a quarter mile to get there, but the trail is a lot faster than you'd expect and in the shade if you go in the summer and there are times when you can drive up the rode. Unfortunately, the fort is no longer quite as fun to explore if there isn't an active event going on, since the ladders to get on the lookout platforms have been removed and all of the little rooms were locked last time...
