Everything was great until the end when we decided to stop at the restaurant for a little lunch before leaving, about 1 pm. First, we waited behind a party of eight while the staff tried to find room for them. The front half of the place was full as well as half the patio and only had 1 stool filled at the bar on the patio. We decided we wanted to eat outside and was told they were all reserved except at the bar which I can't do because of my knees. We were put all the way against the wall in the back part of the building. The rest of the seats in the back section we reserved we heard the waitress tell customers that wandered in instead of waiting at the door. Second, we ordered hot dogs. My husband ordered the homemade chips and I ordered fries. A little later the waitress stops by to say their fryers were down and would take about a half hour to fix and what other side would we like. Nothing else we wanted so she asked if we just wanted two hot dogs. We said that would be fine. The other waitress seated a man next to us at an eight seater but he was by himself, when he ordered she told him they were down to one fryer! What? What is it no fryer or down to one?? Then as we watched a few tables including the "reserved" tables inside and out and table after us getting the food delivered with French fries we were not very happy! The rest if the town was good. We did the mine, train, panned for gold, and the mystery shack, all we enjoyed. Not to mention took an old style photo! I guess you need to call ahead to make sure it is not...
Read moreMy parents used to take us here when we were small. This was the first time I'd been here as an adult and with my own child.
I really didnt get it when i was a kid. I just thought it was some old, wooden haunted town in the middle of the dessert and all the people were probably murdered off. Lol
But going as an adult and actually reading the signs, and gaining wisdom....this place is amazing! It's set up just as it was and the people working it dress as time period.
It was really cool to learn about the woman who founded Callico and was the first female miner for silver in her day!! You can still go in the mines and there are so many holes in the rocks that started a dig, but incomplete that we went inside of.
Theres sooo much history and things to see and explore that you really do need an entire day at least to go through the entire thing.
We stopped during a traffic jam that I wanted to get out of. It was 117 degrees outside and we were grouchy coming back from Vegas. So our trip here was very short...like 30 minutes or so right before they closed. But as hot and irritable as we were, we really enjoyed our time and plan on returning on our next trip out to Vegas.
Donate to their box because it ran off...
Read moreGhost town? I don't think this city knows what a ghost town means. You could go to towns like Tombstone for free and get a better experience. Or get to Europe and walk in almost any town. Or go to old towns in San Diego or Sacramento for free.
But if you're into a tourist set up with up and running shops and restaurants. Then Calico it is. Believe it or not. There is an entrance fee of $8. The people were rude in most shops and don't seem interested in visitors at all. Using their smartphones while people are visiting their stores seems to be more interesting. The place, as well as the shops are overpriced. If you'd like to do an activity it even costs you $2 per activity. It's interesting to read that others find the staff friendly. And they almost take it personal When people disagree. I wish I could agree! But no.... staff was not friendly. Maybe because the friendly ones work during high season?
People who give more than 2 stars seem not to have experienced many other real historic places. A ghost town supposes to be a town where everything has left and where you can feel the vibe of those who have...
