The Kok Gumbaz Dome Mosque (= The Blue Dome). Kok-Gumbaz Mosque was built in Dorut -Tillavat Memorial complex in 1435-1436, by Ulugbek, the grandson of Amir Temur, on behalf of his father Shakhruh. It is the largest Friday Mosque in Shakhrisabz. The mosque’s striking blue dome is covered with sky-blue ceramic tiles, symbolising the cloudless sky and emphasising the spiritual grandeur of the building. It gave the name to the mosque – Kok Gumbaz that means “Blue Dome”. Due to its impressive size and central location, it is visible from almost every point in the city and forms an irreplaceable part of the city panorama A strip with excerpts from the surahs of the Quran runs around the tholobate of the dome. The inscription reads: “Sovereignty belongs to Allah, wealth belongs to Allah”. The internal space of Kok-Gumbaz Mosque is nearly square in its layout and has four deep niches carefully oriented to the each corner of the earth. The whole wall surface was covered with ganch stucco and painted with intricate dark and light blue ornaments. The Kok Gumbaz Mosque is one of the most impressive examples of Timurid architecture and an outstanding example of the harmonious combination of religious symbolism, mathematical precision, and aesthetic elegance.

A complex to visit but bot during the windy time. We can't appreciate the full description of the monuments: mosques, palace, Mausoleums etc... The Kok Gumbaz Mosque, or "Blue Dome Mosque," is a historic monument in Shakhrisabz, built in 1435 by Ulugh Beg in honor of his father, Shah Rukh. Part of the Dorut Tilovat Complex, it served as the city’s main Friday mosque and showcases the grandeur of Timurid architecture. The mosque is named after its stunning blue dome, which rests on a high drum and is adorned with intricate ceramic tiles. Its exterior features geometric designs and Quranic inscriptions, while the interior boasts remnants of frescoes and elegant calligraphy. The mosque’s excellent acoustics enhance its spiritual atmosphere. As part of the complex, the site also includes mausoleums and a khanaka for Sufi teachings. Despite preservation challenges, the Kok Gumbaz remains a functioning mosque and a key landmark, reflecting the artistic and cultural legacy of the Timurid dynasty.

Shahrisabz hasn't that much to offer compared to Samarkand. After visiting the remains of imposing gates of Temur's huge palace we walked south some 20 min through a park, or you can rent a golf cart to reach this complex. There's an entrance fee of 2-3$ pp and consists of 3 parts. The biggest is the Kok Gumbaz Mosque with its big blue dome. Across it are two small Mausoleums also each with a blue dome - one is where Amir Temur's father is buried, the other for his teacher. Aside is a small Madrasah.
