Oldest Temple of Shiva ! From ancient to modern, Pune is home to numerous Shiva temples dnd owing to the huge following of the deity, these temples are immensely popular and are visited by Shiv Bhakts from all around the city. And one such temple is the Wagheshwar temple but mind you people, this temple is far from your regular temples.Located in Wagholi, a suburban area of Pune, Wagheshwar Temple is a beautiful Shiv temple that deserves all your attention. Completely made of black stone and a pond in the front, this temple has a rustic appeal in its architecture and a calmness in its ambience that is incomparable to any other temple in town. As soon as you enter the temple premises, you will feel like you have entered a lush green jungle as you will be surrounded by tall trees all around with the sound of twittering of the birds echoing in the air. Benches have been put up at various spots under the dense trees where the devotees can sit and meditate. As you move ahead, you will see the much talked about Wagheshwar pond on the left. Even though boating is not allowed at this pond, sitting by this pond and just staring at its beauty is all the therapy you need. As you move forward, you will see a ginormous bell and will be able to see the main temple from there. In the front of the temple there is a ginormous white Nandi which holds special significance. It is believed that if you murmur your secret desires in the bull’s ear, he will communicate the same to Lord Shiva. So, don’t be baffled if you find people whispering something to the idol. The temple is made completely out of black rock and there are carvings on the inside as well as on the outside of the temple. These carvings are extremely intricate and you will see tonnes of floral designs and imagery of elephants and horses on the walls as well as on the pillars. The inside of the temple is quite snug, the doors are small and the roof is low too. The temple has a huge shivling in the middle where all the religious ceremonies are held. It is believed that the temple dates back to the Mahabharata era however, very little information is available on the matter. Sprawling with lush green fauna, a beautiful pond and a breathtaking temple, Wagheshwar Temple is a must visit for every Shiv Bhakt in the city. So, when are you visiting this beauty! Where: Wagheshwar Temple Road, Wagholi, Charholi Budruk.

Stone carvings on the outer pillars of the temple include Rama incarnation, Balivaman, Sheshashahi Vishnu, Nrusinha incarnation, Varaha incarnation, Garuda deity, Hanuman, Matsya incarnation, Kutch incarnation, Yaksha, Vyal, Mahishashurmadirni, Malla, Vyal, Kalki incarnation, Ganoshamurthi, Sculptures like war, Ashwamedha Yajna, horse are carved on the stones. Adjacent to the temple there is the beautiful stone tomb of Great Maratha Warrior Subhedar Pilaji Jadhavrao. He was a warlord with a versatile and capable personality. Pilajirao Jadhavrao was the war guru of Great Bajirao Peshwa. Near his Samadhi, Samadhis of many men of Jadhavrao family can be see here. Must visit place in Pune :)

Visited this place with intention to have a start of new year 2022 with blessing of lord Shiva. The temple is located on Ahmednagar Highway. Natural lake adjacent to the temple adds more beauty. It is village deity of Wagholi. It is said that it is ancient temple during the time of Mahabharata and it is built by Pandavas. Chatrpati Shivaji Maharaj also used to visit and worship over here. A very pleasant environment, one can surely feel the holiness in the passage of temple. Really appreciate the administrative committee of the temple (assumed to be grampanchayat), who have kept it very clean. The water in lake is also clean and clear. Even fishes are there in the lake. There are couple of small temples in the premises and carving on it is evident enough to understand that the temple is ancient. It remains close from 12 PM to 5 PM.
