I sometimes wonder whether there should be regulations placed on the use of the term âresortâ(like we need more regulations). What do you imagine when you think of a resort, pools and banana chairs, ski runs and chalets, or an old rundown brick building sitting near treeless paddocks at the edge of a small town? When a motel of the latter description includes âresortâ in its title you have to wonder what it will offer. ||This was my third stay at the Snowy Mountains Resort Motel at Adaminaby, a great little town close to Kosciusko National Park, Selwyn Snowfields and Lake Eucumbene. But unless there are major changes to this motel it will have been the last. On previous occasions it was under different ownership and I took the âresortâ name with a grain of sea salt as the place was quirky and fun despite being a little outdated. Most importantly, the rooms were comfortable and clean and things generally worked.||New owners from Sydney have taken over the business early in the 2018 Australian ski season and seem to be cutting costs and quality, while maintaining expensive room charges, which is not hard to do in a location close to snowfields and limited by accommodation choices. While new management need to be allowed some breathing space to settle in and find their feet, our stay was littered with shortcomings which were inadequately addressed. So here goes.||The supposed premium room we booked had two powerpoints that had been decommissioned (sticky notes verified this), then from the one that did work an extension cable was draped up and over an internal archway across the room to the TV. It looked appalling and was immediately visible upon walking in. A taped note was stuck to the air conditioner saying, âdonât use in winter!â The portable electric room heater sharing the only working powerpoint was barely adequate. The hot water in the shower was erratic, and for a period didnât work at all which was unpleasant in the middle of winter.||After returning for our second night I removed a Red Bull can from our doormat and found the rooms had not been serviced at all. When we asked for clean towels we were given a pile that were neatly folded - but lightly moist. Not pleasant. Just after this the power completely cut out and again we had to approach the staff and ask for help. Close to our room door at all times were laundry trolleys sitting full of either clean or dirty laundry. It was an all new resort experience.||But letâs try to be positive for a moment. The motel has a big family area for eating and sitting around slow combustion fireplaces. There is a bar, old style gaming machines, air hockey and a ping pong table. It is dated but fine and homely and much unchanged under the new ownership. The children can ran around and have a party with new friends being made everywhere. The newly appointed bar manager is terrific and doing her best for the guests. The meals and drinks are relatively inexpensive, though the food menu is fairly limited. For me the highlight of the stay was the spicy chicken curry, which was delicious. Unfortunately, some of the pieces in the fishermanâs basket we ordered were cold in the middle. But by this stage we werenât going to bother complaining.||I have always liked Adaminaby and have stayed at several locations, but unless there is a huge and obvious commitment to improve this motel, despite the captive market in this small town, we wonât be going there again. Fortunately, other options are opening up in Adaminaby and hopefully the new owners will be encouraged to take a good hard look at the potential of this business and long-term custom over the short-term profits. ||Until use of the term âresortâ is strictly governed by an international hospitality code it should be viewed with scepticism, even a sense of humour, when you turn in the gate...

Read moreOnly stayed here as everything in Jindabyne was booked out. Regretted my decision the minute I walked into the room, seriously considered sleeping in the car. In short, overpriced run down motel that needs to have the word resort removed from their name. No restaurant, very limited reception hours, arcades were all turned off, and everything else was seriously worn out. Hot water goes from burning to cold when taking a shower and lost water pressure when other guests around. So much air leaked around front door to the room that heater on full blast only kept the bed warm and everywhere else was cold. Room appeared to have been cleaned but no amount of scrubbing could take out the permanent stains on the walls and toilet. Hair left in shower drain from last guest(s). The one staff member working there was friendly but could not make up for all the shortcomings. No, would never stay here again, rather drive...
