On impulse, my wife decided to surprise me with a stay in the Barossa. After doing some research, she was impressed with what Barossa Shiraz Estate was offering in its website:
“We offer luxury accommodation in the Barossa Valley. Surrounded by vines and sweeping views of the Barossa Valley, each of our cottages is private and self-contained, providing the perfect base to explore this world-famous wine region.”
The lure of cottages “private and self-contained” sealed the deal, so she booked The Willows. On arrival, we were very impressed with the tranquil surrounds and wonderful outlook across the vineyards to the hills. The cottage was equally impressive, harking back to another era and with all the facilities we needed. The produce was fresh and tempting; the bottle of wine a nice touch; as, indeed, was the decanter of port. Everything was impressive - and we were so looking forward to our stay, but … Our private cottage turned out to be not so private. In the evening, we heard quite loud noises behind a locked door that we assumed was either for storage or a part of the cottage used for larger bookings. No. The opening and shutting of doors, clattering of cutlery, sound of flushing and the smell of cooking permeating our rooms made us realise someone was on the other side of the wall - and it was very audible. That was a significant downer of our stay - no privacy, no relaxing. We came so close to just packing up and going about 9.30pm such was our extreme disappointment, to put it mildly. While the other cottages are, indeed, private and cosy, sadly, The Willows wasn’t. To that end, it was an expensive sojourn for what we’d expected.
UPDATE: Thanks for your response to our concern. You have stated the extra rooms behind the locked door are for a larger group. That being the case, we weren’t a larger group, so why was there a stranger within earshot of us? Sorry, but this is...
Read moreThis place is a little gem. Totally as advertised. Manager was easy to contact and responded promptly every time. We stayed at the residence which is charming. It is an old building but that’s what we paid for. Room was warm when we arrived and there was a bottle of local wine and chocolates waiting. Also some port by the fire which was ready to be lit. (Wood topped up on second day but room not serviced actually nice to be left to our own devices.) Very generous breakfast provisions for two days (bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomato, milk, yogurt, and two types of cereal. Artisanal bread (very good) and oil dukkah and fruit mix. A very well equipped kitchen (no oven) and a modern clean bbq. Spa batch complete with plastic champagne flutes and buckets. Great shower pressure and plenty of towels. Also robes! (Bring slippers/socks though because hard wood floors are cold). Beds are comfortable and couch beside fire is a trap fir falling asleep! Really love...
Read moreWe stayed in the “Willows” cottage for four nights while we explored the Barossa with family. Great location at the southern end of the valley, Lyndoch is just down the road and other towns are within an easy drive.
The Willows is a very well appointed, with high ceilings, air conditioning, comfortable lounge area with fireplace, a kitchen which has all you need, lovely bedrooms with a beautiful new spa bath, shower in the main bedroom.
There are splendid views over the vineyards from the front porch and a Weber BBQ which worked well. Our wonderful hosts had left a charcuterie plate and bottle of local red which we enjoyed. The fridge and pantry were also stocked with all the doings to make a continental or cooked breakfast for our duration. Highly recommend the Barossa halloumi.
Would highly recommend as a great place to stay while in...
