My wife and I spent a delightful and very comfortable two nights mid-October 2019 at Leafield's two-person cottage in Dixon's Creek (just north of Yarra Glen). Breakfast supplies were waiting for us. A cosy bedroom with ensuite, and a roomy lounge-sitting room and a well-equipped kitchenette, with a small front deck and leafy views were all we needed. The TV and DVD player were easy to use. (There were also a radio-CD-player, with several Romantic-getaway CD anthologies of sentimental classics, and an assortment of very readable books -- if we had needed extra ways to entertain ourselves.)||The several traditional stained glass windows in our cottage, and the others, are very attractive -- we certainly thought so! -- and exactly fit the overall ambience of cottages. ||The gardens around the cottages, and the owners' house, were beautifully kept, and blooming! If the weather had been a little warmer, the large swimming pool would have cooled us off, but this was late Spring, and not quite suitable for a dip.||The owner was very friendly, and helpful. She told us about the hundred-and-ten-year-old 2-bedroom Rose Cottage, which has all the modern conveniences of our cottage, plus the charming appearance of a well-loved house that has been perfectlt preserved with many original decorative features. The historic photos of Rose Cottage (one of the first dwellings built in the area, we were told) included one striking image of the cottage surrounded by fields of snow!||We had chosen to stay at Leefield Cottages because it seemed ideal for a couple of days in the Yarra Valley. Steel Gate winery was an easy WALK from our cottage, with excellent examples of the local wines. The Dixon's Creek Bar and Grill was even closer (next-door, with an emu in the backyard!), and everybody we spoke to said it was very popular and a great place for a meal. Sadly, it was closed both nights (Monday and Tuesday) that we were there, but it could have been perfect.||We visited several other wineries in the area, including de Bortolli's large family winery which, like many others, also includes a restaurant serving gourmet meals, and tasting platters, matched with particular wines. (De Bortolli's also has an extensive garden for visitors' picnics, but naturally, no BYO wine -- the cellar door has an excellent range of bottles!)||One afternoon we had an interesting time wandering around the antique and opportunity shops at Yarra Glen (the closest small country town, near the excellent Yarra Valley Dairy and Cheeserie!, and also near Coombe Cottage, the famous house of Dame Nellie Melba, the opera star!), amongst other local gift shops, cafes and restaurants. Another afternoon we did the same at Healesville, the other reasonably close country town, but slightly larger and more diversely interesting than Yarra Glen, with breweries and distilleries as well as wine bars, cafes, restaurants and other shops.||We drove further along the Melba Highway, and could have turned left to explore the forests and waterfalls of Kinglake National Park, but instead turned right and drove to Toolangi, a hilly forested hamlet, with a delightful bush walk to the Yea River. We spent some time at the Singing Gardens, the former home and garden of C.J. Dennis, the poet and writer of the early 20th century, and author of "The Sentimental Bloke" and other classics of Australian humour and literature. Dennis's wife established the beautiful gardens while he worked at his writing, and other handyman tasks on the property. The current owner is an expert on C.J. Dennis, and weekend lunches and devonshire teas in the old house are highly recommended. ||The Toolangi Tavern also remembers C.J. Dennis, who often drank there, quoting his line "I dips me lid"! The tasting platter and cider at the Tavern was excellent, and the open fire was very welcoming at the end of our misty drive.||These are some of the reasons for visiting Leafield Cottages, and my wife and I very highly recommend that you...

Everything was very clean, the bed so comfortable, the kitchen well-equipped and the heating more than adequate. I was captivated by the lead-lighted windows, the cosy, leafy surrounds and I was very impressed with the generous breakfast provided. We also discovered a paddock of alpacas just a few meters down from our cottage. When we arrived, the wood fire was already burning from the previous residents, which was lovely, however, when the fire went out later, my husband was unable to relight it because there wasn't enough kindling. Make sure you check for this.||A few minor additions to the kitchen would make it perfect - a dish-washing sponge with non-scratch scourer, a dish-draining rack to minimize having to wipe the dishes which is far less hygienic and one more down light to light up the bench top adjacent to the fridge. ||Although a few trucks went by, we didn't find them very noisy...we have perfect hearing. Ron and Jan were very friendly and I enjoyed the long chat I had with Jan. We stayed 2 nights here and we drove along the most beautiful country roads bordered by magnificent wineries and farms and toured Marysville and Healesville. We highly recommend this place of...
