Idyllic Hospitality
I was very fortunate they had a free apartment and I could stay as their guest at Doktorwirt. The location is no more than an easy 2-3 minute walk to bus number 7, going to the centre (easily change one time to bus 3, 5, or 6 straight to the charming centre of Salzburg).
However you don't have to travel to the centre of idyllic Salzburg to experience the best hospitality Austria has to offer.
Imagine how you would be treated as a VIP (very important person), yet part of the family. Imagine being greeted with the assurance that no matter what your requirements, the hosts at Hotel Gasthof Doktorwirt and their adjacent apartments are ready and very happy to help you, whilst at the same time easy going and leaving you free to choose your own interirary.
Also there is an opportunity to travel by bicycle on perfectly safe and beautiful cycling ways all the way across the German border into the mountains and back again easily in a day. If you are tired and want a break from cycling, simply take the train. Or enjoy a swim in the hotel's pool.
The sights in Salzburg must be seen in one's lifetime - and this is the perfect place to stay. The family is a joy and very extremely pleasant.
They really are simply marvellous and I look forward to returning many times.
Thanks a million Herr Schnöll, Karoline, her sister and brother and the rest of the kind family. Only stay here if you want to receive the best treatment in the Salzburg region.
I have no conflicts of interest in writing what I've said and it's been a pleasure. If possible, I will return.
Very sincerely Five Stars plus,
Dr Leah...
Read moreWe really enjoyed our stay in Gasthof Doktorwirt! The hotel is located in the south area of Salzburg, about a 15 minute drive from the city centre. The hotel is really beautiful, with a lot of older Austrian aspects, an gorgeous large green garden, terrace and two swimming pools. We especially loved the inside pool. There is also a small fitness area (bike, walkingpad, crosstrainer). We stayed in room 9 (double bed) which had a nice large balcony and amazing view over the garden, pool and mountains. The staff is friendly, especially the housekeeping ladies and the breakfast lady.
A few points to keep in mind: The Gasthof does serve really good breakfast with a variety of bread, cake, fruit, meats and cheese. Even lactosefree and soya milk are offered. There no longer is a restaurant available for dinner or lunch, some websites still display this which is incorrect. There is a nice Austrian restaurant (Langenloiserhof) in a short walking distance (3 min) The rooms do not have airconditioning (which we did really miss since it was warm in the room) and no fridge or tea or coffee machine in the room WiFi doesn’t work, we hardly had any connection. It didn’t bother us but it is good to take into account There are shutters for the windows, which is great, but it does leave light through. The curtains are also translucent so keep this in mind for the mornings, the sunlight will probably wake you if you are a light sleeper
We definitely recommend Doktorwirt and will hopefully return...
Read moreWe stayed here for four days including Christmas. We had been pre warned that the restaurant was closed until 25th night.||||The hotel has a historic feel to it and is surrounded by hills and is a v short walk to a bus that runs every 15 minutes or so into central Salzburg (€2.80 per trip).||||On arrival we were greeted by Karoline on reception who was extremely helpful - in fact almost too much to take in. As an example we were given a printout of all the available restaurants for 24th evening (which they celebrate more than the 25th). ||||There are very few TV channels in English so we were glad of our Amazon Fire stick.||||We had a lovely meal in the restaraunt although the menu is entirely in German - whilst Karoline was happily reading all 50 or so options in full, you can't possibly take it all in and the scipt style font prevented Google Translate doing its thing. I guess it is authentic and adds character but you can end up looking for Schnitzels! There is a pub/restaurant quite close too although the directions given were left or right out of the hotel when it was right to the road, then left or right !||||Negatives: The pillows! We had one each which had so little stuffing that it was more like a quarter of a pillow. I did peek into a chest in the hallway that had extras - also note, our double bed was two singles (and two single duvets). ||||So all in all a very nice place if want something a littl emore authentic than central Salzburg offers and...
