I recently had the unfortunate experience of staying at a hotel that claimed to be a 4-star establishment, but turned out to be nothing more than 1-star nightmare. The discrepancies between the hotel’s claimed 4 star rating and its actual condition were both shocking and disappointing. Here are the distressing details of my stay:
Unsanitary Towels and Filthy Blankets: The towels provided were not only old and worn-out but also visibly stained and discolored with dirt. It was a repulsive sight. To make matters worse, the blanket in my room was also in a sorry state, lacking cleanliness and comfort.
Inflexible Reception Staff: Upon requesting two room access cards, as I had made a booking for two people, the reception staff surprisingly refused, citing an illogical reason that they couldn't provide access to two different cards. This lack of flexibility and customer service was highly inconvenient and frustrating.
False Claims of Free Parking: The hotel advertised free parking, and I even confirmed this with them before my arrival. However, upon reaching the hotel, I discovered that there was no parking garage available. They had a measly 8 parking slots on the street, which were frequently occupied. Once those spots were full, guests were left with no choice but to pay for parking elsewhere. This deception was deeply misleading and added unnecessary inconvenience.
Dirty and Neglected Facilities: The toilet facilities were shockingly dirty, and the shower enclosure was filled with dirt and rust stains. It was evident that proper maintenance and cleaning were sorely lacking. The overall lack of cleanliness was highly unhygienic and unacceptable.
Absence of Hotel Porters: A hotel claiming to be a 4-star establishment should have professional staff, including hotel porters. However, to my surprise, there were no porters available to assist with luggage. I was left to struggle with two large suitcases on my own, a task that should have been taken care of by the hotel staff.
Poor Sound insulation: The absence of noise isolation was a major concern. The walls and doors were so thin that every sound from neighboring rooms permeated through, making it nearly impossible to sleep in peace. The constant disturbance from the noise of other guests was beyond irritating.
Non-Functional Safebox: To compound my frustrations, the safebox in my room was not in working order. This created an additional nightmare, as I was unable to securely store my passports and other important items. Given the importance of safeguarding valuables, this failure in providing a functional safebox was not only inconvenient but also raised concerns about the hotel's commitment to guest safety and security.
In conclusion, this hotel was an absolute disaster. I strongly advise you to lower your expectations to that of a 1-star facility if you have any plans to stay here. The poor conditions, deceptive amenities, and lack of basic services make this establishment unworthy of its claimed star rating. Save yourself the disappointment and seek alternative accommodations that prioritize cleanliness, comfort, and genuine...

Read moreWe had three nights at this hotel which is not walking distance to the Caspian sea or the old town but in an area with old style apartment buildings, ie. more of a local atmosphere. There was a supermarket only a few minutes walk away for bottled water and supplies (we have our own travel kettle and make light meals in our room when not eating out) and the room had a minibar fridge. There are a couple of restaurants close by but one in particular did not seem to want to serve tourists. For transport the #88 bus (to the old town, the Bulvar and main train station - 28 May) is only one block away and costs only 2 manat per ride. You do need a Bakikart costing 2 manat (providing you have sufficient money on it, it can be used for more than one person) which can be purchased from a vending machine at the bus stop. However that was out of action when we were there but one of the receptionists lent us his until we could get one of our own from the stop near the old city - they are available at stations also. All the staff were magnificent - so helpful, one even walked us to the bus stop and helped us to cross the main road for the first time! We were in a standard triple room which we paced out at being 100 square metres - huge! The main drawback, which could easily be rectified, was that the single bed did not have a bedside table or light making it very difficult to read in bed. Despite that inconvenience we were very happy with...
