We were at the Pompano Beach Club many years ago (2013) and returned with our kids now aged 9 and 5 as well as their grandparents (in their 70s). We have been to Bermuda three times and stayed at Grotto Bay last year mainly because it was so close to the airport and was touted as family friendly.
Pompano is definitely a bit further away. We had a bit of a wait at the airport to get a taxi (apparently a super busy day for Bermuda when we landed). It was about 40 minutes or so to get to Pompano Beach Club.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the room was a little dated. However it was well kept and there was a pull out sofa for my oldest daughter and a little cot set out for my son. There was a king sized bed as well which was nice because last time we stayed in a resort here we had two double beds so the room was definitely bigger. There was also a little mini fridge which was handy as we stored some sparkling water and cheese that we got from the market up the road.
There was both a tub and a shower in the bathroom so good for little kids who don't shower and for adults who do.
We had an adjoining room with the grandparents which was convenient. There were many cottages we stayed in the dolphin house. The views from the terrace were amazing. The entire hotel is located in an amazing spot. The beach here is very shallow which is part of why we booked here. In low tide you can walk out almost half a mile or further. There is some snorkeling at the reef out by the furthest swimming dock. Lots of toys for the kids including swimming noodles, swimming mats, and snorkeling gear. We didn't rent kayaks but those were available as well. The hotel also provides bait for fishing (squid rings and bread) and fishing poles. There are boats that go out further for fishing as well as sunset cruises you can sign up for at the hotel. There is live music most nights and our kids enjoyed the Steel drums performance a lot.
We were here Monday for the Rum Swizzle party and outdoor barbecue grill. There was an impressive display of salads, cheese platter, ribs, steaks, fish. The food was ok but the star was the dessert table and the pastry chef who had made I think every dessert out there including chocolate cake, carrot cake, bread pudding, chocolate mousse, flan, multiple cheese cakes, peanut brittle, banana cake, and probably a few others I have forgotten about. We had the meal plan which included dinner (5 courses and breakfast which was a mix of buffet style vs ordering off the menu). There are two restaurants for dinner, ocean grill and cedar room. Ocean grill required reservations but that wasn't an issue for when we visited in mid July it was always available when we wanted it and I recommend the outdoor seating. Highlights included the surf and turf, fish chowder, cold gazpacho, swordfish. A lot of the steaks were underseasoned without any salt so I had to add that back. The kids menu was convenient and had traditional American offerings including hamburgers and hot dogs.
There is a golf course which I believe is operated by the government which is connected on the further topmost cottage to the Pompano via a small path with commanding ocean and sunset views.
Lastly the service was very friendly all and all. Met one of the owners who was very nice and offerred advice on things to do. They sell ferry passes (you only need 1 zone 3 not 4 per adult however for the Dockyard to Hamilton ferry). They drive you to the supermarket, the Rockaway ferry (more of a commuter ferry) or the bus station. They called the night before we departed to help arrange a taxi back to the airport. A shout out as well to the bartender at the Sand bar Kairo who helped make a makeshift Gatorade for my father in law who was having some dehydration issues out of orange juice, salt, and limes.
There are a lot of stairs to the ocean beach (about 86 steps). Not an issue for the kids or us but somewhat laborious for the grandparents so keep that in mind if you have mobility...
Read moreI am a kid who has never written a review before but felt inclined to write one after my luxurious winter break here. The resort displays its Trip Advisor score at the welcome desk, so I know it helps them too. THIS PLACE IS NOT REAL LIFE!!!! For starters, the water on the beach is literally not a real color. Like it is so pretty that it cannot be real. It is hard to pick my favorite part of this place, but the food might be near the top. If you're a wrestler like me, then this place is probably not for you because every dinner is 5 courses. The only reason I was able to not gain weight was because of the beautiful fitness center with a wondrous view of the ocean. I'm not even joking, I ran 4 miles per day just trying to sweat off the weight from the delicious food. And to make matters worse, I literally found out today that I wasn't competing in sectionals anyway so I could've eaten even more food. At tea time, there were these cakes with chocolate in them that I think I was addicted to they were so good. ALSO, the chocolate muffins at breakfast were to die for. If you are the pastry chef reading this review, THEN PLEASE RESPOND WITH THE RECIPE TO THOSE MUFFINS. They are my new favorite food not even kidding. At breakfast, some large lady was complaining about the ketchup being empty and I think she took them all before I could get my big-backed paws on them. I'm not even done talking about the food yet. The kind lady at the front desk took an order from my mom to make my brother's 14th birthday special and the pastry chef made him the most delicious cake I have ever tasted. |The last night we were there, they had a grill buffet where the pastry chef created the most delicious desserts I have ever tasted. Cakes, pies, mousse you name it EVERYTHING was there. I think I may have gained 5 pounds from this meal alone. The chef also made some amazing steaks and side dishes. And do not let me leave out the staff. The restaurant is home to a literal Romanian prince who speaks 6 languages. His name is George and he is the sole reason I am living. I never saw him without a smile; he compliments everyone and everything and makes them feel so happy. I love George with all my heart and I hope that if I come here again he will still be here.|Enough with the food, there was also a game room that my brother and I spent hours in. We used the Fussball table so much that the screws started coming loose. There were also real arcade games and other stuff. We are so pampered with the private beach right beside the resort. The water was freezing in the middle of December, so fortunately there was a heated pool and 3 hot tubs! The beach is beautiful and it is enough to just look out into the crystal clear waters and ponder the 30-degree weather you will return home to. The shower in the rooms is so marvelous. The water pressure is so good that when I got home and showered I actually cried. It feels like it's massaging you; I would go here again for the shower alone.|There is literally nothing bad I can think about this resort besides having to eventually leave and go back to snowing freezing weather.|Eventually, the day came when we had to go home. Tears streamed down our faces as we said goodbye to George, and everybody else, and left the island. I miss the food so much and if you're the pastry chef please send the chocolate...
Read moreIt really does come with a heavy heart that I have to write this review. I feel that so much of our world is taken over with corporate entities that I truly want to always support family-owned businesses. I think there's a lot to be said when there's a history with a piece of property, but also, having a business in my own family, I know that it takes hard work, dedication, but also the ability to see when you need to make changes. That, unfortunately, seems to be the main story of the Pompano Beach Club in Bermuda.||Larry and Tom are the two brothers running this property that has been in their family for quite some time. It's my understanding that it may be getting too much for them to run, or so I was told by some of the local island folks. This property could absolutely be exquisite. The location is like no other, but it is simply not well-maintained.||The rooms smell like mildew, and to a degree that it's genuinely unhealthy. You can tell that they need an overhaul and a major renovation. The pool looks very dirty, and it's my understanding that a child went to the bathroom in the pool and it was removed, but there was no treatment to the water, and guests were allowed to immediately go back in. The water is very murky, as is the water in the hot tubs, and they need a good cleaning. Most of the time in the evening, you'd never see anyone in the hot tubs because they just looked dirty.||The hotel also does not do anything to control the birds, and to say that there are bird droppings everywhere would not even be giving the statement justice. The Cedar Room is completely covered in bird poop, and you can visibly see the birds landing in the dishes, on the tables, and in the food when there's a buffet. It is absolutely disgusting. Even the Ocean Room has bird poop on the walls, although they tried to do a little bit better of a job to keep it off the chairs. All of the chairs on the outdoor patio are covered in bird poop, and they don't clean them, ever. It's understandable that there are birds, but I've never been to a hotel where the indoor and outdoor dining tables, furniture, walls, etcetera, are covered in bird poop.||There also seems to be a seaweed issue, which naturally the hotel can't control, but the beach should be cleaned off every morning. Furthermore, there should have been a warning that with the seaweed comes Portuguese man-of-war, because multiple guests were stung.||Now, for the positives: The staff at the hotel is wonderful. They are all friendly and welcoming. The food is also very good, but it's difficult to eat when you're dodging birds pooping on you or when you're seeing the birds landing on your plate or in the buffet. It's just not sanitary.||Many of the guests that were staying at the property had been there years ago or maybe just a couple of years ago, and the general sentiment was that the property is going downhill. My suggestion would be that they let a management company take over and truly transform this property. The staff is excellent, the food is great, but if you want to attract the right clientele and have return guests, you need to do updates. Your rooms cannot smell like mildew, and you cannot have bird poop all over your restaurants. The pools need to look inviting. Like one woman said, she had been there 30 years ago, and she said it was...
