There are not many hotels in the immediate area, and I find myself needing to stay in this neighborhood occasionally, but had never tried Bessa Beach Hotel before, so I thought I’d give them a try. My first impression was that I didn’t find the employees very helpful. When we parked in front of the hotel and took our bags out of the car, the bellman asked “do you want help bringing those into the hotel?” I knew that there wasn’t a chance that he'd be bringing my bags up to the room, and I was right. Later, when coming back to the hotel after dinner, we greeted the desk clerk with a “good evening”, but he couldn't be bothered to reply—I guess we disturbed his nap. ||The hotel elevator had an overwhelming odor of mold, probably from guests using the elevator directly after the swimming pool. Our room was not much better: there were no hangers in what passed for a closet and the bathroom was very small and uncomfortable. ||The bed had only 2 of the flimsiest pillows I've seen in a long while. We called the front desk to see if they could send up 2 more. We waited for a while, but finally gave up and went out. When we returned, we called the front desk again, and with a new shift on duty, it was an easy task (as it should've been the first time we asked). The bed was so uncomfortable that I hardly slept at all.||When I moved the pillow, I discovered that there was an electrical outlet behind the pillow on the headboard. I don’t know what the building code is, but I’m pretty sure that an outlet behind a pillow would not b on the “good idea” list.||I have never stayed in a hotel that didn’t have a room safe, until I stayed here. ||Overall, I won’t be staying here again, and I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone...

Read moreThis is basically a 3 star pousada charging 3-star hotel prices. Apart from the reception staff (OK friendly) I cannot recommend this place for foreign visitors accustomed to nice, comfortable homes. We asked , and paid extra for, a room with veranda. The room itself was air conditioned but the veranda was an improvised job, with a plastic roof and no comfy chairs to sit on. There was only one small sheet on the bed. There was only one glass available in the frigobar. The bathroom towels were medium size and damp. There were no toiletries (shampoo etc). The breakfast was not good. Did not try the internal pool which was sunshine free. Worse still, the beach opposite was declared permanently closed for health reasons. You can apparently take a taxi to a beach 6 kms away. There were no pleasant resturants near the hotel (the miserable-looking pizzeria next door was closed). We walked along the back street parallel to the main beach promenade. The sidewalks were full of holes, building rubble and general garbage.||||As for the city itself, I discovered no redeeming features. Even the official Tourist Office was not enthusiastic, saying "Don´t bother wasting your money on a taxi to see the "historic center". Above all there was (in late November 2017) an all pervading smell of sewage, apparently a long-standing problem not addressed by the local government. ||||We decided to cut short our one week holiday after three days. Despite the rave reviews on Booking.com etc of the Bessa Beach Hotel I would advise normal foreigners to stay away, both from the hotel and from Joao...
