We booked this hotel after an acquaintance recommended it for the amazing view and excellent food. Unfortunately the hotel is an hour away from Barra da Tijuca, in a village with no good beaches close by and on top of a hill. You need a car for everything. As soon as we arrived, we were surprised to hear very loud music from the house in front were people were practicing samba for the carnival. The receptionist wasn't expecting us, despite my having talked with the owner, booked and paid half of the stay at very high rates as a result of new year in Brazil. She said that she didn't know I was coming with kids (which I had clearly told the owner) and she was going to get a mattresses put on the floor for my 7 year old son... never mentioning a crib for my 2 year old daughter. The hotel and reception looked empty, dark and very unclean and untidy. The receptionist immediately required credit card payment before seeing our room stating it's their policy for guests to pay the full amount on arrival. After paying we were allowed to get the key to our room. The stairs to get to the room were dangerous and you could see the a completely abandoned backyard a very short distance away from a favela (shanty town). The room looked as though it hadn't been used in a long time, dusty and without any type of comfort you'd expect from a good hotel: no air conditioning in the sweltering heat, no tv, and a bathroom with a huge window anyone could see you from the outside, and the room door was so insecure and easy to open without a key, that my 2 year old daughter did so without effort.|| ||The moment we saw the room we decided to leave the hotel. We were lucky enough to find another room in Rio for the whole New Years week, which is as packed as Carnival. We lost a lot of money and had to cancel the credit card to get back the part we had just paid. ||The owner never showed up to talk to us and the receptionist apologized but seemed surprised by our decision to leave... we felt cheated by the awful conditions and the lack of respect...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I stayed there for (unfortunately only) one night in April 2015. It was lovely! Although, our room had an "old charm" the whole Pousada is tidy and proper. The pool is very clean despite only having litte chlorine in it. There even was a another Wi-Fi for the pool area. The owner, a Belgian, is super friendly and even picked us up some 10km away for free and on the second day drove us through the village to show us a secret hiking path. Ask him about the five secret beaches and don't forget to pack mosquito repellent (a lot) for the hike through the jungle. We even saw a wild capibara on one beach!||The Pousada also has a restaurant with an Italian chef. Very, very tasty!||||In short: if we come back to Guaratiba, we will happily stay...
