If you're used to campsites offering a little square of grass, a fire pit, and a dingy shower, you will be amazed and delighted by Strongwater, which is so much more than your regular campground. Owners Cheyenne and Dwayne are committed to animal rescue, specializing in poultry, and also to actually meeting their guests and making them into family. Many of the folks we met there have been coming for years. Cheyenne and Dwayne know everyone's names (even those staying over just one night), down to the tiniest baby.||||It's fun to watch the faces of newcomers as they get out of their cars - especially the kids! Where else can you camp surrounded by hens, ducks, geese, and their babies? Where else can you recycle your compost by feeding it directly into the ever ready mouth of Jellybean, the large resident pig, or wake to the sound of the rooster? Everywhere one goes in this place, kids are clustered around animals, stroking the friendly cat and rabbit, following flocks of chicks, or swinging on the tire - the best kinds of hands-on education.||||In terms of amenities, the showers are first rate, and there is an excellent room to wash dishes. Also a communal fridge/freezer, and even complimentary herbs and veggies from their organic garden and greenhouse.||||The campground is perfect for children of all ages, which included our (elderly) group. We got to water the greenhouse, chop wood, and hand feed Patti the Peeper, a two day old chick who hatched early and needed many mums to raise her. Many evenings, we were joined at our spacious firepit by Cheyenne and Dwayne, or Liza, their go to assistant.||||Cheyenne and Dwayne don't just offer you a place to lay your head, but a place to learn, to hang out with critters of all kinds, sing around the camp fire with people from all walks of life. Honestly, you never know what's going to happen next (a sampler of spring rolls sent by the neighbours, or a new clutch of baby ducks to dabble in your dog's water bowl). It's an immersive and communal experience/experiment that I doubt you will find anywhere else. ||||Strongwater is just a few minutes walk from the ocean, and also the start of the trail up to the Skookumchuck Narrows - a beautiful hike with extreme kayakers to watch at the end. There are lots of fun activities close by (we saw Orca from our kayaks right off the marina) and several great spots to eat for a variety of budgets. ||||Really - what's not to like? You won't regret a trip to this most special spot. Book early - there's a lot of repeat...

Read moreIf you are planning on booking a summer vacation - I would caution in this location. We booked a night stay last summer (July) and it were kept awake all night by large ants! (Lots!!!) It was horrible, they were coming though the walls and all over our bed. We let the host know and they initially were very apologetic and offered a discount for the night. Indicating they would send a e transfer refund. We headed on our way only to never receive the promised refund. When we followed up they basically told us they didn’t believe us and had changed their mind on a refund.
I am all about supporting local businesses, but just not this one... Do yourself a favour and find another place :)
UPDATE As per the owners reply she indicates she did not give a discount because she never met me and only met my husband? thinking I was an unhappy person.... Thanks Cheyenne! not only were you a horrible host turns out your a bit judgmental too! Hope you feel better knowing I was recovering from a very serious illness and surgery and just was on a get away with my husband for the first time. The rest of my time was spent in bed....one thanks to you was filled with ants.
Like I said - STAY AWAY! I would recommend the...
