10/26/2025 - The JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Shanghai Pudong is situated on the banks of the Huangpu River - Shanghai's mother river. From a river view guest room, you can overlook the river and view Shanghai Puxi skyline from south, beginning with a rainbow-like Nanpu Bridge, to north panning through a 180 degree panoramic scenery view.||It is enjoyable and memorable to walk along the Riverside Avenue right after exiting the hotel in a rear door to admire the Shanghai Puxi skyline, the Shanghai Tower, the World Trade Center Tower, and the Jin Mao Tower, which are collectively known as the "Three Brothers," to the north.||If you stay at this hotel, walking along the Riverside Avenue with tranquil oasis during the day and transforming into a fairytale wonderland at night with its illuminated riverbanks is your life-time memory - don't miss it because many other ultra-luxury hotels in Shanghai do not have this kind of immersive experience!||I also enjoyed the Executive Lounge experience with many young intern waitresses - their professionalism with smiling, constantly bring drinks to guests - will ensure them coming back again.||On the other hand, the Executive Lounge is located on the second-floor, meaning all aforementioned breathtaking and spectacular viewing will be blocked. As a result, the Club Lounge at the Sheraton Grand Seattle in the U.S. beats it only in a 180 degree panoramic view comparison, but the quality of the drinks, including cocktails and sparkling wines, foods and services here beats the Club Lounge's at a day-and-night difference, which might be a culture difference between the two countries, even under the same hotel management company Marriott® Hotels.||Note: All newly built Marriott hotels no longer have their old glories like a grand & luxury bathroom, e.g., with expensive marble floor and tub, check a junior suite at the Renassance Shanghai Podong, or InterContinental Shanghai Pudong, where you will enjoy those...
Read moreI generally choose to stay on the Pudong side during my last night in Shanghai, as it's closer to Pudong Airport. Last time, I chose the Marriott and had a substandard stay, so I decided to step up to the JW Marriott this time around. Boy, was I glad I threw down the extra Yuan for the upgrade - it was like night and day.||||First off, the service level was definitely a notch above - the step-up in elegance and grace was apparent, and English levels were superior to the standard Marriott as well. And everywhere - from the lobby, gym, restaurant and guest rooms - was more luxuriously appointed here as well. The breakfast selection was far superior; both the quality and choices were definitely on another level... In fact, I'd put the breakfast experience on a much higher pedestal than the one I experienced at the St. Regis on the Bund.||||What also helped my stay was the complimentary upgrade from the 46m² Executive Room to the 92m² Suite. I'm sure the base rooms were just as smartly and artistically furnished as the larger accommodations, but the extra space definitely helped.||||Be aware that - at least at the time that I booked - the JW Marriott commanded far higher rates than the Marriott Pudong, so while the value for money equation depends on your willingness (or lack thereof) to spend, there is no mistaking the JW for the "regular" Marriott. It was like night and day, and this property is certainly befitting of the highest-end business hotel brand in Marriott's portfolio.||||One final thing - if you're visiting Shanghai as a tourist, I do not recommend this hotel - it's not the most convenient location, and I would definitely urge visitors to stay on the opposite side of the river for the sake of...
Read moreThis hotel cannot be recommended strongly enough. We were stopping over in Shanghai for just one day and thought it best to book a hotel car to transfer from Pudong Int'l airport. Upon arrival at the hotel we were greeted like VIPs by the staff and taken straight to our room for a pleasantly surprising early check-in (which was unrequested by us). We were able to grab some breakfast on the Lounge floor, which set us up nicely for a crammed day of sightseeing and shopping. The day ended with an excellent meal at the Flint restaurant. Our room was well appointed and very comfortable, with excellent views along the Huangpu river. As for the staff, they were among the best we have encountered in any top hotel around the world - very professional, but also friendly, courteous and helpful. A special mention goes to Eileen (check-in), Edison (concierge) and Ronnie (front of house greetings and taxis). All were superb. The location is also ideal - peaceful and slightly away from the action, but still a short (and ridiculously cheap) taxi ride to the spectacular skyscrapers of the Pudong and colonial buildings of The Bund. The hotel gave us a card with the address in Chinese to show taxi drivers for return journeys. The odd poor review below seems to be speaking of a different establishment from the one we were in. We are already planning for a longer stay next time around. Small footnote. We took the Maglev train to Pudong airport on the return journey. It ran on time to the second and delivered us in 8 minutes to the airport (at a very smooth 300 k per hour). All for about 5 quid. Makes our so called Heathrow and Gatwick 'Express' seem a...
