Upon arrival observed the Front office staff yell across The bar to a patron who had just handed his key back” you must pay for an extra night,” to English patrons who looks surprised and said yes, no problem. We were then booked into the wrong rooms. We were supposed to be in an upgraded room. Interesting that they always put you in the wrong room that is at a lower standard when you check in late. They never make a mistake by putting you in to the better room. When it was explained to the front of staff that we were in the wrong room. Front of staff said there were no rooms available for that night at the level we had paid for. She asked would we like to be booked in to the room we were expecting the following night. Strange to be asked if you would like to be put into the room you were entitled to. Next morning breakfast was almost worse. Cooked breakfast was cold upon Collection. Pager Service. Very limited breakfast. Hardly any napkins or cutlery available. The Moxy Advertisers ironing boards, however, there is no laundry available. When you ask the front office staff if there is a laundry service or launderette in the area the front office staff casually throw their arm out to the side and say there is one out on the road. The closest laundry is in actual fact 1.4 km away and this laundry has extremely bad reviews. The next closest laundry is approximately 5 km away and you have to pay 300 RMV for a membership first. Not great for tourists. The main problem with this hotel is that the front office? Staff are extremely rude Rushed and not willing to assist any of the paying customers. There is no concierge. There is no information. The nighttime security guard at the front is literally asleep at his desk as you enter the hotel. This was entertaining, however. Housekeeping staff are friendly and the rooms I cleaned well. There is a kettle and 2 cups in the room however, there are no teaspoons tea, coffee or sugar provided. There is no room service. If you order a taxi or Didii they are unable to attend the front of the hotel. You have to run out approximately 70 m to a busy street and wait. Sometimes they will not come to your side of the road and you have to cross four lanes of traffic or wait in the rain. The location is where the homemaker Centre of Shanghai is. There is not an abundance of restaurants that you can...
Read moreFirst Moxy stay in China after three previous Moxy experiences in Tbilisi, NYC and Milan. I knew the young almost hostel crowd and the highly social concept probably wouldn’t translate well…but perhaps it was even less than I thought, even if Marriott tried the same sort of hardware (though I guess none of the sexually suggestive imagery in the hallways - that seemed missing).||The clientele I saw during my short stay here seemed indistinguishable from well what I’d expect at any similarly priced hotel in China - a bunch of middle age disproportionately male business travelers. It was Friday night. But they certainly didn’t seem ready to party. Even at checkin, when I selected the restaurant voucher…the agent was very adamant in emphasizing to me it had to be used in the evening 8:30 pm or earlier…(I had remember the Tbilisi location seeming very active at 2:30 am)….yes, there was still the combined checkin area, bar, social space, restaurant, pool tables etc….but it almost didn’t feel like it got a lot of use. Actually one example I can think of domestically is Hyatt’s JV UrCove doing this better - at least the Shanghai Jing’an location actually seemed popular. And the local brand CitiGo does this good social spaces idea reasonably well across the country. ||The room was fine - pretty standard look to the others with a vague industrial loft style, and certainly a lot bigger than say NYC (though space mostly empty). No desk or anything. One observation is the sheets seemed higher quality…although the bath towel was quite small.||Overall, I’m not sure I understand why Marriott agreed to put a Moxy here. It’s a conversion of an existing building off the elevated highway two + kilometers out from Xujiahui….not exactly a trendy or happening area (see above, CitiGo properties actually in interesting areas - Sanlitun, true Jing’an, Shekou, true entertainment districts). And at the price point - unless a true Marriott loyalist (I had a points promotion I needed to finish!) domestic brands like Atour (noticed a big Atour House just up the road) are probably as good or better quality (more room features)….honestly overall it feels like Marriott just wants a slightly less stodgy lower tier brand in China…and is using Moxy in a different way than internationally? I don’t really get diluting the...
