The location, the reviews on Agoda, plus the four star rating made me decide to stay at the Shanghai Deco Hotel, conveniently located near the Pudong International Airport. After staying 5 nights in the city of Shanghai at a Hyatt Place which was as solid and as predictable as any international sleep factory it was time for some ( not all ) adventure, and generally four star hotels in China are actually pretty good. So the question is: is the Deco a four star hotel? Well, no. It isn't. Maybe a three star but with much room for improvement.|Taking the reviews on Agoda as a lead, here are my experiences:||1) Hygiene/condition of the hotel: below average. It is worn down, rooms are moderately clean, furniture in-room and in lobby, public spaces are chipped, leaking ceiling in the lobby. So 2 stars at best.||More serious: the toilet in my room didn't flush. For the number 1: no big deal, as a guy you walk in, do your thing and walk out after flushing. You won't notice when you are alone unless you are very interested what happens after flushing. For the number 2 however..... and especially when that door doesn't close it's no joke. I was lucky to leave my souvenir just before I left the room for my flight but that was a coincidence.||2) Facilities: Yes, it has facilities. A couple of vending machines. Kitchen however isn't great and the breakfast is less than average. The coffee machine is capable of making a cappuccino. But it won't. "American" powder coffee it is, with milk or as espresso, both not my cup of ehm.. coffee. For the rest: it's Chinese kitchen but hey, if you don't like Chinese food in China you have a problem.|And one thing I found really annoying: the smoke free hotel isn't smoke free. Interweb is available but did not have the greatest signal in my room. There is a TV in the room with some 60 Chinese channels and some movies but you would need one of the Chinese online payment services to watch one. So bring a deck of cards.||3) Location: if you need to be at PVG: yeah, great. And the shuttle is a plus. But it's in the middle of nowhere on a sort of industrial site. Maybe good for a boring walk but it will be your only activity unless you are an enthusiastic hiker and go for a long distance. I didn't try it out. |And I had a room with a view, or at least a window. But it was so dirty it was hard to look outside. When I did there was a stack of two 40" containers with one very rusty corner on the far right side. I don't want to know what caused that. |4) Staff: very friendly||5) Value for money: depends. If sleeping is the only thing you want to do near PVG.; sure. Any place with a fairly clean bed will do. But I...
