From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly and felt right at home. However, what truly made our stay memorable was the exceptional service provided by Christina at Front Desk.Traveling with two young children can be a handful, but Christina went above and beyond to ensure our needs were met and our stay was comfortable. She was attentive and accommodating, offering helpful suggestions for family-friendly activities in the area and making sure our room was well-equipped for our little ones. Her genuine care and attention to detail made us feel like VIP guests throughout our entire visit.The hotel itself was immaculate, with beautiful, modern décor and top-notch amenities. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean, providing a relaxing haven for our family after a long day of exploring. My recent stay at the Sofitel Hongqiao Shanghai fell short of expectations for a five-star hotel. While the property has potential, several aspects significantly impacted the experience. Dining - The breakfast and lunch buffets were very underwhelming, with limited options—particularly for those expecting a Western or French cuisine as advertised. The offerings leaned heavily toward Chinese cuisine, including dishes like mainly crayfish, which may not appeal to all international guests.Service - Unfortunately service did not meet the standards of a luxury hotel. Almost all staff besides managers don’t speak any English so communication is very difficult. Staff generally across departments like reception, concierge, security, fitness centre and restaurants all seemed disengaged, unmotivated and lethargic. While the management did apologise and offer a discount and concession on our second night after we raised concerns with our room and service, the overall atmosphere lacked the warmth and attentiveness expected at this level. Overall - Having stayed at other five-star hotels, including the Intercontinental which is nearby, the difference in service, quality and attention to detail is huge. The Sofitel Hongqiao has the foundation to be a great hotel, but improvements in management, staff training, and guest experience are needed to truly justify its “five-star” rating, currently it’s probably four stars in my opinion.
