The hotel is conveniently located near Window of the World, and we enjoyed watching fireworks from our room, which was directly across the street. Our trip was intended as a romantic getaway with plans for shopping and fine dining. However, the hotel’s proximity to Happy Valley and Window of the World seemed more suited to families than couples. We often heard children running and shouting in the hallways, especially in the mornings and evenings. While not the staff’s fault, the lack of supervision from other guests disrupted the atmosphere we were hoping for. The staff was very accommodating, decorating our room with towel swans and rose petals. The room itself was small and felt a bit cramped. The tub is centrally located, which, while nice, doesn’t maximize space. We ordered room service several times, but it was challenging to enjoy due to limited space. The room service menu was adequate, though a more extensive selection would have been appreciated, as we wanted a relaxing day in. The hotel is connected to a mall, which offered a range of dining and shopping options. However, larger guests might have difficulty finding clothing in the Holiday Plaza, as the sizes tend to cater to smaller frames. We dined at the rooftop Grange Grill once. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the food was enjoyable, but prices were high. Despite a reservation made by phone, there was no record when we arrived. Fortunately, seating was available as the restaurant wasn’t busy. Our table was behind a pillar, which obstructed my view, though my husband’s was fine. The staff was generally attentive, but at times seemed curt. When placing our order, the waitress commented, “I think that’s enough,” which felt unnecessary as I had ordered a simple meal of lamb chops, mashed potatoes, and spinach. Portions were reasonable, with the spinach being a highlight. My husband’s steak was good, though not as well-seared as he prefers. Our wine was also enjoyable, with staff keeping our glasses filled. While attentive, the staff often stared at us while we ate, which felt intrusive. As African Americans, we’re accustomed to some staring, but we didn’t expect it in a high-end setting. Other foreign guests didn’t receive the same attention, and at one point, kitchen staff openly observed us, which was uncomfortable. While our experience wasn’t terrible, it didn’t meet our expectations for a romantic getaway, and we likely won’t return. However, the location is ideal for families visiting Happy Valley and Window of the World, with plenty of nearby stores and restaurants. Due to language barriers, we couldn’t make a reservation at the Wagyu steakhouse. We also received a spa voucher but didn’t use it, so I can’t speak to that service.I hope this...
Read moreThe best thing about this hotel is its location. It sits right above a swanky mall, which is served by a subway station right at its doorstep. This means two things. First, you have a nice choice of restaurants - including a cosy cafe in the basement serving Taiwanese fare, a reasonably-priced Japanese restaurant on level 4, and Honeymoon Dessert Cafe on the ground floor, which serves Hong Kong desserts. Secondly, you don't need to step outdoors to access the subway system, which is the easiest and safest way to get around Shenzhen. There is a subway-access through the basement of the mall. In addition, I also really like the decor of the room. While essentially very Westin in concept, the dark green feature wall above the headboard is very modern and very oriental all at once, and lends character and depth to the room. What I'm not crazy about though, is that the Executive Lounge, on the second floor, is completely closed in. One of my favourite Westin Executive Lounges is a newly revamped one, which is similarly located on a low floor, and has large windows overlooking the swanky Pavilion mall, that run the length of the lounge and even has a bacony at each end, allowing in a generous dose of natural light. I spent a good amount of time in that lounge reading over a cuppa, but I can't see myself staying very long in the lounge at the Westin Nanshan, big and comfortable as it is. Perhaps this hotel would consider this when the time comes for a making improvements to its facilities. Finally, this hotel also needs to work on its SPG recognition. Of the three times I stayed here, usually a booking of two rooms on each stay, I have only been upgraded once. On this last stay, I did not get an upgrade, and the hotel also credited me with only one night when I had two rooms booked in my name and paid for with the same credit card, although this was quickly fixed after a phone call to the SPG hotline in my...
Read moreAs a Western businessman, I had the pleasure of staying in the Westin Shenzhen Nanshan for the first time in June of 2025. I have been to Shenzhen many, many times and this was my first stay at this Westin. The experience at every level was outstanding. From the terrific breakfast, incredible rooms with phenomenal service, to the location near the amazing shopping center, metro stop, banking locations—everything was perfect. But even beyond the great service, location, and food, I'd like to make a special shout-out to two particular employees who deserve particular recognition. I needed some medication at a Western pharmacy which was very nearby, but I couldn't find it on my own because of an error on my phone map app. Herry, one of the front-line staff, went beyond the call to personally help me find the pharmacy, which was a lifesaver for me. Herry's extra efforts are the kind of service that creates lifetime loyalty and is something I have never seen at any other hotel. In addition, I'd like to especially thank Hassan, who worked reception at the hotel but, for all practical purposes, could have been a concierge extraordinaire! I had a bunch of transportation and logistics questions, needed advice about local events, and not only did he help me download the right maps and extra information to my phone, but his advice was beyond flawless and made my Shenzhen visit far more productive and efficient. He is an incredible asset to the Westin. Between Herry and Hassan, the Westin Nanshan will now be my go-to hotel when in Shenzhen. I am already looking forward to...
