This was our first holiday in Kyrenia, though we had visited before on a day trip from Paphos many years ago. We said then that we would like to come back someday. Well this is that "someday". The wife did a lot of research and found The High Life. A lot of very good reviews from people who seemed to return many times. The wife corresponded with Huseyin several times. Each time he answered our questions and gave us confidence that this was a nice place. Huseyin organised a taxi from Larnaca airport. You do need to have your passports to hand to cross the boarder between the North and South. The wife has food intolerances to Mushrooms, Garlic, Onions and has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes. Huseyin together with Eugenie, the manager, helped her to be able to enjoy the food and drink at the hotel. The hotel has a "Whats App" group for every room where you can book a taxi, and contact the hotel should you have any problems while away from the hotel. A cracking idea. The staff, Victory, Sarah and Anna were the best we had met in a very long time, always going the extra mile, to make our holiday that little bit extra. And Bik, the chef, amongst other job titles. Bik and Eugenie helped the wife with the ingredients of all meals, taking out the items the wife was unable to have and adding those she could have. The food in the day and at night was very tasty, and reasonably priced. The views over the med at meal times was fantastic. Looking out over the Med you will find the 3 tiers, the first is a wooden deck area with an "Egg Chair", the next is a grass area with 2 sunbeds, and the last is a paved area where there are several sunbeds and sun shades. If there is one negative comment I have, and its the only one, it would be the steps down to the paved area. We prefer to be next to the sea, rather than the pool. The climb back up to the hotel is very steep and you need to be fairly fit to do it. You need to climb back up for meals, refreshments and the use of a toilet. So staying down there all day is not an option. The rooms were spotlessly clean (cleaned each day) and comfortable. Some had views over pool and some with views over the gardens towards the port. The gardens were well kept. We used to take a walk out into the surrounding area, Karakum, to eat midday or evening. There are some very nice restaurants within a 20 minuet walk. You must look for the ice cream shop called Mardo's, (Its next to a supermarket called Malto), some of the nicest flavours you will find. We had a great time there, meeting some great people from around the UK and Germany. Would we go back?? I don't know. As I have said there was only one negative for us, the steps up and down to the sea. We prefer the sea to the pool so this was an issue for the wife's knees.
I would like the say a huge THANK YOU to Huseyin and the family of room 35 who arrived after we had left. We had, unknowingly left 2 of the wife's rings in the safe. We realised that they had been left behind a couple of days after we had arrived home. The rings were found and Huseyin has arranged for them to be posted onto us when the family arrive back in the UK. ...
Read moreWe are independent travellers and as such always look on social media and sites such as Tripadvisor when choosing hotels. High Life had some very good reviews so we booked a room there 3 years ago. We were not disappointed.
A charming manager/owner supported by a small but caring and dedicated staff looked after us as if we were family. We went back last year, taking some friends and enjoyed the same wonderful service. The rooms had been uprated and are spacious and well-equipped. Every room has a small balcony which is ideal for just sitting on at sunset and enjoying a beer from the minibar . The public areas are clean and comfortable and the pool area with bar is inviting. Plenty of sun-loungers and, unlike many small popular hotels, never felt overcrowded.
But for us the most wonderful time was breakfast on the patio. Tucking into a good-sized tasty English breakfast with a touch of local cheese, fresh coffee, watching the sun coming up and listening to the waves below was a fabulous way to start each day. There is an extensive menu for lunches and dinners with a reasonable wine selection, and very reasonable prices, and every now and again a themed night with open air BBQ is put on.
I'm happy to drive around Northern Cyprus and High Life can organise a rental car at very reasonable cost. One cannot drive into Southern Cyprus though. If one chooses not to drive High Life can organise trips and outings and can help with dry-cleaning, restaurant recommendations, taxis, flights and pretty much anything one can think of. Huseyin the manager speaks perfect English and is usually in reception , pleased to advise any way he can.
After saying so many good things about High Life Hotel I feel I must mention some (for me) slight down-sides. There is no beach to speak of, steps lead down to the rocky shore where there is a jetty one can dive off. But no good for children. The first floor rooms have nice views across the sea and we've always chosen one, but not sure about the views from the ground floor ones. Unlike larger hotels a small charge is made for Wi-Fi.
However these small asides will not deter me from going back to one of the most inviting and friendly spots I've found in years and we're looking forward to going...
Read moreWe stayed at highlife for 10 days in June. It was our first visit to this hotel but it won’t be our last. We have already booked to go back again in October. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds with the most stunning views. The pool is clean and a lovely size. The hotel only has 20 rooms so it’s not overly busy, never an issue getting a sun lounger by the pool or on the decking area right over the sea. The maids were friendly and clean the rooms daily. Mini bar was refilled daily too. There’s also a WhatsApp group set up for each room so any time you wanted a drink or an ice cream, just send a WhatsApp and within minutes your order is with you! Brilliant idea which I’ve not seen anywhere else before. The staff, particularly Huseyin, Eugene and Yosef, all such nice people that couldn’t do enough for us. My partner proposed to me in the most romantic way and it was with Huseyin and Eugenes help, that it really was a night to remember. Thank you so much for making it so special. We are planning to get married at Highlife. It’s the most perfect place! We didn’t want to leave and we are counting the days till our next visit. If your considering booking a holiday here, then don’t hesitate! You will have the best time and I guarantee you’ll book to go back! Thank you Highlife for the best holiday 😊 See you...
