Just back from three wonderful days on the Danish island of Bornholm. While geographically closer to Sweden than Denmark, Bornholm is about as Danish as it gets with stunningly picturesque scenery almost everywhere you gaze.
While the inland is mostly agricultural, Bornholm’s main attraction is the dozens of charming ancient fishing villages and pristine, sandy beaches along its coastline. Among Scandinavians like myself, Bornholm is known as paradise for cycling and there are plenty of specific bike routes that allow you to discover the island's many, many gems.
We opted to stay our two nights at Hotel Blomme's Place in a residential part of the village Snogebæk. Blomme's is about a 20 minute walk or 5 minute bike ride to the harbor and the nearest beach with plenty of restaurants, tourist shops and a pretty big general store along the way.
The room we stayed in (#25) didn’t have much of a view (a tall hedge), but it was large enough for us. We particularly enjoyed the big bathroom and super comfy queen size bed.
The breakfast they serve at Blomme’s is absolutely superb with lots of goodies to choose from and plenty of places where to eat.
The owner of Blomme's Place is Lasse and if you see him during Bloome’s 5 O’Clock gathering around their outdoor bar, be sure to spend som time with him. Lasse's wealth of local knowledge and of Bornholm's long and interesting history (the island was once ruled by Russians and before that Swedes), is only matched by his relaxed, Danish attitude. He’s a friendly, generous and charming fellow all around.
I could easily argue that Blomme's doesn’t really qualify as a traditional hotel. It’s more of an upscale Bed & Breakfast if you ask me. That said, there is certainly no lack in the service level among Lasse's staff. Including his very likable son Lukas.
Through Lasse, we rented a couple of good quality e-bikes for a day-long excursion around the island. Highly recommend doing this unless you’re serious into bike riding. Mostly because the island does have a fair share of steep hills, but with an electric bike, you'll also be able to see all the more of beautiful Bornholm. I’ve done both and prefer the e-bike experience by far.
My only concern during our stay was that Blomme’s didn’t have a reliable Internet connection. Sometimes it worked great, other times it was non-existent. We spoke with two other guests and this was a problem for them as well. From one of Lasse's staff members we learned that this was a problem for the entire Bornholm, but we never experienced any problems at other places on Bornholm. Hopefully Blomme's will get this fixed.
I can definitely recommend staying a couple of night’s at Blomme’s Place. Especially if you want a calmer and cozy stay...
