The Hotel Strandparken in Holbaek, Denmark is advertised as a conference and functions hotel – but in reality it is very 'tired'. Several months earlier we had reserved a superior room for 8 nights which overlooked the fjord but we were given a room that was anything but superior overlooking a side road with trees. Our complaint about this was simply met with dismissal by an ‘anything but helpful’ receptionist. They had had several months to get this right but still messed it up!||The first thing you notice in the hotel after leaving the main area is that the corridor to the rooms walls are discoloured, marked, disgusting and desperately need painting. ||Our room was very basic with lumpy beds and zero cupboards (shelves instead). Window between bathroom and bedroom. We had to close a curtain over it for any privacy - but even the curtain was so thin that it's virtually see-through!||Housekeeping in the room was 'hit and miss'. Sometimes vacuumed, sometimes not. The bathmat was missing for two days. We were only given one bath towel other days. One of the sliding main window curtains was out of its 'runner' and hanging loose. This wasn't fixed during our entire 8 night stay.||The room’s TV was not working at all on the first day. On subsequent days there were only 10 channels with no English language ones at all. In the short time we were examining the channels the picture was constantly pixelating and screen intermittently going blank.||Then there was the ridiculous problem of service lorries visiting the hotel early morning and waking everyone up unnecessarily. ||The hotel’s wi-fi was free but very poor signal strength in the room so the internet connection was very intermittent. ||The room’s air conditioning wasn't working so we experienced some very hot and stuffy nights which added to our sleeping discomfort. ||||The hotel’s dining room carpet was dirty. There were cobwebs at the top of its walls and thick layers of dust on the light fittings.||At breakfast there were identical items EVERY morning. No variations and no toaster but at least the food was edible. Our single evening dining room experience however was very poor. The smoked salmon salad that I ordered was just about acceptable – but the vegan ratatouille my wife ordered was completely inedible. This consisted of nearly raw vegetables with tomato puree squirted over them. She requested bread but this request was ignored. We were forced to pay for the inedible ratatouille by restaurant staff despite our objections. Apparently, their manager would not listen to these objections. After exhausting all other avenues and reasoning with them, I told them that I would be writing to their Managing Director on return to England. This was met with blatant sneering, they just didn’t care. Eventually though, the cost of the ratatouille was refunded when we checked out. Frustratingly, it should be noted that the young evening staff in the dining room have poor attitude problems, are rude and are arrogant. If they don’t like their job and don't care enough about or respect their customers then why are they still there?||||Sunday evening everything was closed, no bar, reception, dining room etc. Not 4 star service in our opinion and other guests were saying so too at the time..||||The Hotel Strandparken is (supposedly) classed as a 4 star hotel but it’s nowhere near as good as many 2 star ones in the UK and elsewhere. It’s certainly not worthy of 4 stars or even 3 and just possibly worthy of 2 … just!||At least 50% of the hotel staff were very arrogant and rude with lots of eye-rolling, tutting and 'don't really want to help or even be here' attitudes which made us feel most uncomfortable. ||The Hotel Strandparken is a very disappointing, tired and overpriced hotel which very nearly provided us with a ruined holiday and was a (hopefully) forgettable experience.||If another nearby hotel had been available we would have checked out and moved to it. Our friends, who also stayed here for several nights, agree with our conclusions. They described the hotel as ‘a joke’.||||To conclude, we wouldn't recommend this hotel to our...
Read moreThe hotel is in a nice location and close the the Fjord which provided a nice stroll along in the late afternoon after work. My room was adequate in size but the bathroom was old and the shower curtain was badly stained at the bottom - bit off-putting. That said, the shower was really good with lots of hot water so no complaints on that score. The hotel is very basic and badly needs renovating. There was never anyone on reception when I got back to the hotel at approximately 5.30pm which was surprising and I had to book a table in the restaurant online from my room. On appearing in the restaurant at the allotted time, I was forced to wait 20 minutes just to get a drink as they had a large party going on and were very short staffed. The manager was very pleasant and did her best and I was accommodated and the food was excellent but wow so expensive - as were the drinks! I didn't eat there again for the following 3 nights as a consequence - shame really as the food really was good. The most disappointing for me was the fact that they do not service your room unless you ask. I did mention this when I checked out and was told very firmly that they make it clear that is for sustainability reasons. I am not sure how making a bed, emptying bins and checking on loo roll/coffee quantities has anything to do with sustainability but there ya go. I was told that they make it clear both in the elevators and on the room card that this is pointed out. Given I didn't use the elevator nor did I have a room card (I only had a code to get into my room), I was not aware of this - there is nothing in the room itself and I've checked on the website since and cannot locate any such notice, so you'd think they would make it clearer for everyone.||Overall for me, it had the feel of a hostel and not an hotel which is fine if you were not paying hotel prices - definitely better elsewhere.||I think it is a shame as it could be really nice but given I will be in Denmark for some months now, I will not be returning unless it is the only option. I much prefer the Sidesporet Hotel where they do service your room and are very attentive...
Read moreRooms were ok, nothing special. The bathroom has clearly aged and the TV was partly broken. Beds were comfortable and it was warm. View was not great - even though there is view to the fjord, the construction bits and dumpsters were not exactly pretty to look at. The conference facilities were not very good. The hardwood floors are as noisy as they are pretty - just not practical for large groups. Chairs, adjunct meeting rooms, and open coffee corner outside the conference room further added to the poor noise environment. Also, there is only open WIFI (no password), which brings along some issues for certain company implied restrictions. And the conference room was super cold, which couldn't be adjusted. The food was the worst, unfortunately. If you are not the typical meat-and-potato eater, your needs will simply not be met. Dinner consisting of a small assortment of root vegetables left several from our group hungry for the night, thus visiting the next 7/11 down the road. While some of the staff is very friendly and accommodating, other staff was jut not on top of their game and one waitress was fairly rude actually. Overall, I perceived it quite pricey for what we got. Would not...
