It was difficult getting to the hotel/finding the right location to take the canoe. Got scammed by one of the canoe folks when it was supposed to be free (I guess it's my fault, but that's still sleazy of them). The hotel itself is very pretty. It is NOT in the middle of a jungle like how some reviews say-- it's actually in the middle of a river. Once you're on the island/hotel, there is no way out without one of the employees. With that, we found there is nearly nothing to do on your downtime. You're trapped on this plot of land with a swimming pool, a pool table, and a couple hammocks. Great if you just want to relax, but NOT if you're itching to explore. The tours are only 1 hour or 1.5 hours long, so the rest of the day is dedicating to finding ways to kill time.
THE TOURS. We had an English speaking tour guide who did a subpar job giving a tour. His English skills were perfect, but he lacked effort and enthusiasm. During our first river tour, we learned little to nothing about the area and he probably spoke 8 sentences at MOST about the river. He never elaborated on anything about the river. Usually on tours, you are supposed to learn a lot, but here, I learned maybe 3 quick facts in an hour. The jungle tour was better because there was a lot more to ask about and to learn about. The tour guide was more talkative this day (but he was still quiet and unenthusiastic). It's a very cool and beautiful jungle. Overall, the tours were very uncomfortable. It could easily be an amazing experience if more enthusiasm and excitement was there.
Lastly, the food. The employees would tell us when to come back for meals and they'd have our table set every time. The food was pretty tasty BUT my partner and I actually got awful food poisoning and an intestine infection from it. I know this for a fact because food poisoning takes from 4 hours to 24 hours to hit and it was my 3rd day there.Their food wasn't piping hot a single time it was served. If it isn't piping hot, do yourself a favor and ask them to heat it up or you'll end up in the hospital like me!
OVERALL, this hotel is WAY too expensive for what you get. I spent a fortune to spend 3 days doing nothing when I could have been out exploring. There is not much to do at the resort itself and you're trapped there. The tours are subpar and not even close to being worth it. You can get an amazing tour for a fraction of the cost somewhere else. You might get food poisoning here, but maybe the world will spare you.
I will say, there was a big thunderstorm that rolled through at night right overhead and it was super cool. Hearing all of the jungle night sounds was another cool experience that's hard to find. The front desk lady is great and so helpful. There is also the cutest cat in the world who lives at the resort. If you're JUST looking for a place to kickback, this is the...
Read moreWe stayed in this hotel/lodge back in October and my family and I were very impressed. ||After driving from Quito to the rain forest, we needed a place to rest, wind down and enjoy the surroundings and M.A.L fit our needs. The view from the hotel is breathtaking. The rooms are comfortable and clean with all the amenities needed for a relaxing stay. We were mostly impressed with the pool and how well kept it was. However, the best part of our experience was PACO the parrot. Upon our arrival he intrusively welcomed us and after some hesitation from our part he followed us everywhere we went. It was like he knew he was the star of the show and we were so amazed by every little thing he did, sometimes territorial other times submissive,||he was even at my door step the next morning when I woke up. I've never experienced anything like that before and until now we talk about him.||Going back to the hotel, we didn't request for a room with AC because we wanted to forget the comforts of modern living. All we had to do was open the windows and the river breeze was enough to make our night pleasant. I had a great night sleep complemented by a hearty breakfast that was included with your fare. Fresh fruit, bread and our host PACO hanging out right next to us.||Overall it was a great experience. Thanks PACO and all the...
Read moreRecently stayed here for volunteer trip. The hotel itself consists of cabanas spread over a large area. They have a central area with dining, casual seating, a large screen TV and monkeys. Yes, monkeys are all over the place! Watch your stuff, they will steal. The cabanas are well equipped with all the comforts you normally wouldn't expect in Ecuador, including hot water, updated bathrooms, toilets and toilet paper provided! Comfortable, clean, very few bugs in the rooms which is quite an accomplishment there. Pool and outdoor seating area is very pretty. Staff did a wonderful job accommodating our large groups, meals were well-prepared. There is also a bar in the central area (but it's SUPER expensive even for Ecuador, so I suggest buying alcohol across the river and taking it back) Warning: You have to take a rickety canoe-looking boat to get to the hotel. It's not the most...safe. The drivers are pleasant and seem very good at driving these boats, but if you aren't keen on crossing the Rio Napo at least once a day to get anywhere else, I suggest staying elsewhere. Also wifi is sketchy at best, but impressed...
