Hostal El Colibrí — Hotel in Puyo

We stayed here on the recommendation of a friend. The rooms were clean, especially the sheets and the bathroom, which is always a must for anywhere I stay. It rained every day we were there. One night it rained so hard that the second pillow on the full-size bed I was sleeping in was soaked through. Simple fix--moved the bed. My friend was on the opposite side of the room and did not get wet. There is no maid service, so if you need toilet paper or clean towels, you have to ask for them. If you want the trash taken out, you need to do it. The shower was either extremely hot or it was cold--no happy medium on that! We stayed in the Squirrel Room (Room A). The dog, Mocha, was a highlight of the stay as she would often come into the dining room to check out what was going on or to say hi. I had to work during this stay, so I ended up in the dining room most evenings as the internet does not reach the rooms. Breakfast was simple and the same each day--bread, eggs, juice, tea or coffee. We were quoted $12/night by one person and $12.50 by the owner. Breakfast is the $2.50. So you can likely stay for $10/night if you don't need breakfast. There are bakeries and little restaurants around the corner. We stayed here a couple of nights and it was a mostly positive experience. The hostess was nice, gave us a map of the town. The room was good, bathroom too. Breakfast was good as well. What we liked most, was the nice and quiet in the courtyard and the hammock in which we could enjoy this. What we liked less, was that the room itself was very noisy. We could hear everything that the ppl in the room above us did (literally hear them brushing their teeth) and every time they walked, it sounded like the ceiling would come down. Also a minor complaint: it said onlibe that the hostel has a kitchen, but this turned out to be the owner's kitchen and we felt a bit weird/bothered to be preparing our meal right next to her family watching a movie... Susanna, the owner, cares a lot about the people that stay at her place. She went out of her way to help me and make my stay enjoyable. She thought I may have booked a trip with a sketchy guy to go to the jungle and insisted she call him to make sure he was legitimate. She also gave me great directions to go downtown Puyo to find a machete, rain boots, and fishing line. I got a private room with a shower, a hammock outside, and a breakfast for $12.50.
