I spent two nights here; during that time, I was the only guest in the entire place. I had several chances to chat with the owner (in Spanish) who told me that at times the hostal is completely full, with no rooms free, so there seems to be great fluctuation in usage. They keep most of the rooms open during times of few guests, which in my case allowed me to inspect almost all of the guest rooms (which are all on the second floor).||||So, selling points of the hotel: most rooms had comfortable, queen sized beds; soap, shampoo, conditioner, and towels are all supplied; overhead fans are in the rooms; the location is not on a main thoroughfare, yet is only two blocks from downtown (one has the pleasant illusion of being away from the city, with a river and woods out back), breakfasts are delicious (cold juice of tree tomato or mora, hot bread, delicious fruit cup of bananas, watermelon, papaya, and either kiwi or strawberry, with yogurt available for topping, eggs - fixed in whatever style you like - and either hot coffee or tea), and the upstairs hallway between the rooms has nice decor, with comfortable, soft chairs, sofa, and a table for reading or laptop computer use (though no WiFi available there).||||Limitations of the hotel: most rooms have small bathrooms (in mine, the distance from the front edge of the toilet to the wall was only a foot and a half - barely enough room to allow the knees space while sitting or to walk past to enter the shower), many have torn shower curtains, Wi-Fi works in some places on the second floor but not in others, shower water temperature is variable (so that one is constantly changing the knobs as the water goes from too cold to too hot and back again), one or two rooms have a rather musty smell, the owners let their yapping poodle run all over the place and bark at guests (though the poodle can quickly become your friend if you make an effort), there are no writing desks in the rooms, and the place is not "wheelchair friendly." Except for meals, no food or drinks are available on the premises (e.g., no Coke or snack vendors or ice machines) and no telephones are around.||||Other comments: if you speak Spanish, you should be fine in communicating with the staff or in watching the cable TV (where all channels are in Spanish). The (color) televisions have remote controls and screens that are about a foot and a half tall by a foot and three quarters wide (plenty big by 20th century standards, a bit tiny by current ones). Nightly charges are per person, not per room, so that if you are a family of 4 or 5 and there is not full occupancy, kids could stay in one room while the parents stay in another, at no extra charge. When I visited in July of 2014, that charge was $35/person/night.||||In all, I had a nice stay there and slept well. However, the rather laid back attitude of the owners means that this place will probably always be a hostal of "great potential" and charm, but unrealized possibilities. It's not the best value in Puyo. (Las Palmas - two blocks away - is an example of one place in Puyo that gives more bang...
Read moreWe stayed one night here while in Puyo. The town of Puyo has little to offer, but compared to all the other places seen in town this place is very nice. It had attractively decorated rooms, at least one with a balcony. Views of a garden and the Puyo river. It was owned by a family that lived in the house below all of which was very nice by Ecuadorian standards. The owners did not speak english, but we had a guide. They were not rude, but not friendly either. The rooms were clean, but did have a pesticide smell. This improved after airing out the rooms by opening the windows. One room was a 3 bedroom suite, but the hot water did not work in this room that night. The other one was a single room with working hot water. Good breakfast offered with rate. TV in rooms, but no english channels. I can email photos if needed. Overall good value for the cost. Just not much to do in Puyo unless you are headed...
