Huoneistohotelli Marja (Apartment Hotel Marja) is situated in the old wooden house which was built in 1882 as a barracks for snipers. Nowadays this old barracks building is renovated and protected. The hotel was opened in 2012. The same owner has Hostel Marja (also known as Hostelli Marjan Matkakoti) in the neighboring house. Home of kind customer service is the motto of this apartment hotel.||Apartment Hotel Marja has nice apartments. Each apartment has an own bathroom (a toilet and a shower) and a kitchenette. You find an electric stove, a microwave oven, a toaster, a refrigerator, a water kettle, a coffee maker and dinnerware (tableware) there. Also some cooking oil, salt, sugar, coffee powder, tea bags and oatmeal was available in my single room. They also have twin rooms, triple rooms, a romance suite and a family suite. The family room is separated from other apartments. Totally there are 25 beds in the hotel. Rooms/apartments have an iron, an ironing board, a television and a hairdryer. Pets are allowed in some rooms (fee 15 euros/stay). There isn't any cooling air-conditioning in the house but you may keep big windows open if it is too hot in your room.||The walls of the house are quite thin. So it is possible that you hear some noise from other rooms but I didn't hear anything between 10 P.M. and 7 A.M. Thanks to good neighbors. Besides, the bed was very comfortable. So my sleep quality was very good. The hotel wishes silence after 10 P.M.||There is a nice summer terrace and barbeque area next to the hotel. There are many activities available there: petanque, badminton, darts, disc golf, Finnish mölkky game etc. The surrounding area is a beautiful old barracks area which is very green. There are a museum and many statues or monuments there. The nearest grocery Store (Sale) is situated less than 300 meters from the hotel and there nearest grocery shop which is open 24/7 (ABC Market Pitkäjärvi) is located 1.6 kilometers from the hotel. The city center of Mikkeli (The Market Square) is situated 1.1 kilometers from the hotel. Distance to Pond Urpolanlampi with a swimming beach, beach volleyball courts and a beautiful trail around the pond is less than a kilometer.||In summer a buffet breakfast (8 A.M. - 10 A.M.) is included in the room price: bread, cold cuts, scrambled eggs, meatballs, porridge, pancake, juice, coffee, tea etc. Even mushroom salad which was made of mushrooms picked by the owner was available. During a low season they haven't any breakfast buffet. Instead of it they bring breakfast supplies to the room already in the evening. The reception is open at 8 A.M. - 8 P.M. (Sundays 10 A.M. - 4 P.M.) in the summer. During a low season opening hours are shorter, on weekdays usually at 8 A.M. - 6 P.M. If you don't see anybody in the reception you can press a call button. And if you are going to arrive after the reception is closed you must inform them in advance and they leave your key in a locker with a code lock. ||Apartment Hotel Marja isn't a luxurious boutique hotel but I really loved it! It is much more comfortable and more personal than any chain hotel. It was very exciting and wonderful to sleep in a historical house which is almost...
Read moreThis unique B&B is located in the middle of a beautiful park that has several old wooden barracks that used to be military staff offices. The surroundings therefore are just amazing and the hotel definitely is the most pieceful place there is in Mikkeli.||||Parking is always easy and it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the city center. Also the technology park and the campus areas are just around the corner so this B&B is also ideally located for business travellers looking for something other than boring hotel chains.||||The breakfast is usually served directly to the room so it is easy to leave the hotel whenever you want. Unfortunately there are no gym or other extra facilities, but the park area and the nearby lakes offer an excellent jogging possiblities. ||||Each room is different so the experience can be somewhat different depending of the room. Overall most rooms are very comfortable and simple. There are no luxuries, but the rooms have everything you could need during a trip - and if you are missing something the staff is the most helpful and friendliest you can find from Finland. Wifi...
Read moreWe were two nights on the hotel on separate occasions. Hotel is located just next to the infantry museum and has plenty of free parking space. The building is old, in a very traditional Finnish style. It also means that it's not fully accessible. Every room is unique. Rooms were very clean and the family room had two separate rooms (a bed room and a living room/kitchen). The studio room had a musty smell, though ("old house smell") and the pipe of a radiator was leaking a bit... The studio room was also missing blackout curtains so in summertime you couldn't get the room dark - a thing that may bother some foreigners unaccustomed to Finnish summers...||||Hotel is quite small and peaceful so you can easily avoid big crowds which is good thing nowadays... During corona epidemic they bring (a bit limited) breakfast to your room in the previous evening. Staff was helpful but available only until 6pm or so. The surroundings of the hotel is very quiet, but it also means that there not much to see in the immediate vicinity of the hotel except the infantry museum, which is...
