Stayed in cabin 3 for a week in early January, with plenty of snow, cold (-33 degrees on some days), absolute quiet and peaceful surroundings, close to no light pollution (keep an eye on the moon calendar though) and nearly every night aurora sightings right on the spot. No need to travel anywhere to hunt for auroras. The only challenge was to know when there was something going on above the cabin to then get dressed (plenty of layers everywhere), either watch it from right outside the cabin or walk 50m to the tower, climb the stairs and have a full 360degree clear view. Once we watched an aurora shine right above the Norwegian fell while sitting inside the warm living room and looking out through the window, another time one above the house while in bed and glancing up through all the toolsom window.
Private sauna and private fireplace helped get warm again after cold stays outside. Nice and manageable walks along the road i.e. to the village and the little low key café, and also the bridge to Norway. Plenty of more routes offroad possible - but with the intense cold and high levels of snow it was easier and seemed safer to walk on the street. Next time we'll try the snow shoes, which - just like kick sleds and skis and poles are free to use for guests. Also the host Juha made snow suits and winter boots available (free for guests), you definitely need them when it gets this cold ;) There is plenty of wood available too, to make cosy fires in your own fireplace or in one of the shared fire/grill huts. The cabin had all the tools and appliances we could ask for - even sharp (!) knives. Beds were comfortable. Electric heating can be adjusted per room. We got our supplies from the supermarket in town, which is about a 50min walk (one way) in heavy winter clothes along the snowy snowmobile lane and on the car road. There is also a restaurant just below the Lomatärppi ground, part of the neighbouring accommodations.
Last but absolutely not least: we felt overwhelmingly well hosted by Juha and his family. Juha helped us out on several occasions and patiently answered our zillion questions even long before coming there, but also while there. The atmosphere at Lomatärppi was very calm and relaxing. It certainly did not feel like yet another tourist machinery trying to swallow as many tourists as possible. Juha also has a tiny cute shop-hut on site offering his and others' handicrafts work. We only stayed a week - and we were probably lucky with mostly cloudless nights and windstill days and very active auroras. But we are absolutely sure that this specific place of Lomatärppi, the spotless cosy cabin with all its amenities and the caring and passionate host family had a big share in what turned out to be our most magical winter holidays...
Read moreWe LOVED staying here! You are surrounded by trees, and it’s so serene! If you want to see the northern lights, you can go to the tower they have to see above the trees. A few nights when we were there, they had an amazing aurora that you could see from just outside your cottage because it was directly overhead.
The owners were very nice, and they made sure we had a great stay. Juha showed us the kick sleds, so we went on the trails with the sleds a few times, which was really fun. We even saw reindeer a few times!
The cottages are really nice, and I loved that we had everything we needed, so we didn’t have to leave if we didn’t want to. It’s the perfect place to get away...
Read moreIncredible place honestly what else could I ask for, I highly recommend coming here if you want to see some of the best Aurora and you like nature and quiet.
Incredible gorgeous quiet location right next to a beautiful river and mountains. A few mins from town (easy drive). Except you still feel like you in nature. Insanely good part of Lapland to see really good Aurora every time I’ve been here I’ve seen amazing aurora . The cabins I stay in are beautiful and simple(nice), very clean and cozy, great front porch looking over a valley. Pretty easy to find and get into cabin. Can’t wait to come back...
