Château Saint Vincent — Hotel in Langon

A let-down from the start. We were impressed when we spotted the frontage, but had to go a long way round to the back to enter the property (booked well in advance).||A dog barked fiercely at us as we parked our car in an empty yard. Finally, a man left a greenhouse-annexe affair and pointed to a long, dirty conservatory jammed with junk. We had to find the correct door ourselves, then waited at the desk a good ten minutes after dinging the bell.||A lady wearing several woollen cardigans topped by a jacket under a fur gilet appeared. We could well understand her garb - it was icy cold in there, though warm outside. She took us up a dirty, once-grand staircase onto a landing with beautiful polished wood floor and some antique furniture amongst old toys.||Our room was small, empty and had one inadequate see-through curtain. The shower-suite, in a sort of cupboard, looked quite smart, but we put off having showers until morning. I left the bathroom door open to facilitate a breeze (we had made the icy room quite hot at first to warm ourselves up after a long, arctic wait. The bed was not a 'real bed' and had thin, old covers.||I awoke about 2am to use the toilet and to my dismay founds the foulest smell in the shower room. So upon leaving I shut the door.||About 4.30am we both woke to the sound of loud bubbling, and the room filled with the odour of effluent. We hurriedly put our things together, not even washing or cleaning our teeth, and opened the window to the early-morning cold and damp. At 6am we felt justified in descending to complain.||The husband eventually came, but could not speak English. When his wife arrived she was in a fur coat. By now we had waited an hour, standing in the cold.||'You should have put a towel over the drain hole in the floor,' she said, as though this was an obvious answer to the problem; and 'why did you not phone me when you noticed it?'. We said we had no idea that she would be available at that hour.The husband brought out some forms for me to sign, but I refused, suspecting a Disclaimer.We telephoned Booking.com on the spot, who promised to look into it, and suggested we only paid half - but wanting just to leave right then (now 8am) we paid the full amount. Happy to say Booking.Com refunded us...

The mixed reviews on the site suggest that some people see "Chateau" and think that guests will live like royalty amid gilded furniture and crystal chandeliers. However, once you get inside, you can see that the estate has had better days. The couple that has bought the place a few years ago is fixing it up, but current the decor is on the cluttered, eclectic side. Our room was clean and comfortable (if possessing the world's ugliest lamp, which I'm now kicking myself for not capturing on camera). The property itself is about a 10 minute walk from the old town center of Bazas.||||A standard continental breakfast is served, and the hosts sat with us during the morning meal and provided some good advice for the region. There were only two minor annoyances: 1) Wifi works only in the common areas, and 2) when we checked out, we were surprised to find that credit cards were not accepted (it would have been nice to know this in advance so as to not have to take a special trip into town that morning to the ATM). But overall, for 85 Euros it was a decent place to stay...

Nous aimons loger chez des hôtes pour nos déplacements, pour le côté convivial et familial, pour le partage. On nous a offert un coffret Wonderbox à 149€ et avions envie de nous faire plaisir et d'honorer nos amis qui ns ont fait ce beau cadeau. Ns avons donc choisi le Chateau St Vincent qui semblait magnifique et ns paraissait offrir ces prestations avec comme offre : "cocktail d'accueil, dîner gastronomique, nuit au Château et petit déjeuner". Parking sur l'arrière du Chateau, dans la boue,chemin vers le Chateau non éclairé, passage sur le gazon trempé, il a fallu sonner et attendre à la porte. Ns sommes entrés ds un hall glacial, on ns a indiqué notre chambre et précisé que le repas serait à...19h30. Chambre à peine tiède, radiateur de salle de bain éteint. Une douche mais sans rideau, donc on inonde tout. Le repas ns a été servi ds la cuisine, et était bon mais bien loin d'un dîner gastronomique, cocktail de bienvenue = kir avec vin ordinaire, 3 cacahouètes qui se battaient en duel avec 3 cranberry, vin au cubi servi ds une bouteille de vin sans étiquette, un mini magret pour 4, accompagné d'un gratin de blettes à la béchamel, des restes de fromage avec du pain style pain de mie et un roulé à la confiture un peu sec. On ne ns a proposé ni café ni tisane. Quant à la nuit, un matelas posé sur un sommier ordinaire à lattes très inconfortable , des murs et plafonds si minces qu'on a l'impression que le voisin du dessus est ds votre chambre ( on entend ronfler, marcher et le bruit de la chasse d'eau), au réveil la chemise est moite d'humidité. Quant on vante une nuit au Château on donne une jolie chambre (surtout quand il n'y a personne d'autre), et on fait une jolie table ( les photos donnent envie sur le site) Petit déjeuner très ordinaire avec pain de la veille, croissant congelé passé au four qui tombe en miettes, jus d'orange et yaourts très ordinaires. Les confitures maison étaient très bonnes. Je comprends qu'entretenir une telle bâtisse est un gouffre financier, mais recevoir ds la cuisine, ne pas chauffer les couloirs et salles de reception etc etc n'est pas acceptable quand on adhère à un programme qui vante une "nuit d'exception au Château". Soit Wonderbox ne vérifie pas ses prestataires, soit les prestataires trompent sur la qualité de leurs prestations. Nous sommes restés sur notre deception et sommes bien embêtés d'avoir à dire à nos amis que leur cadeau n'était pas super et que nous avons gâché 149€... ||Mais je suis honnête, et j'aime aussi dire ce qui est positif : le Château est très beau, il est sans doute beaucoup plus agréable l'été, les hôtes ne sont pas des personnes extraverties mais sont gentils, et ont beaucoup de courage de restaurer ce bâtiment. Pour nous les meubles font partie de la déco et ne ns ont pas choqués, enfin nous n'avons pas eu de chance d'avoir un temps pourri ( et ils n'y sont pour rien) mais cela aurait été bien de ns prévenir de ne pas nous garer loin de l'entrée . ||Donc pour nous ce n'est pas une nuit d'exception au Château, il faut le voir comme une nuit ds un cadre sympa...
