This hotel is just off the main square of the very attractive and up market small town of Lyons La Foret. We booked on line. We arrived at the time we had specified, after dark in the pouring rain. We had great difficulty finding the hotel and eventually had to ask at a neighbouring hotel. They directed us to the entirely unlit and locked hotel. In the very meagre street lighting it was impossible to see what it was, there was no door we could open, no bell, no notice saying how to check in that we could see in the gloom.||We went back to the neighbouring hotel and the receptionist grumbled that there should be someone there and she was on her own. It turns out that the two hotels are owned by the same person. The receptionist took us down to the hotel, led us up a very slippery and slightly rickety external staircase (not suitable for those with any mobility issues) unlocked the door and showed us into our room. Once in, the room was fine, nicely decorated, a good size with a smart recently refurbished bathroom with the full range of facilities and the bed was comfortable. We discovered the shower was a bit feeble in operation. Despite being right on the main street it was very quiet.||We ate at the other hotel (L’Licorne see separate review by the same reviewer) as the restaurant in our hotel was closed that night (like everything else).||Overall apart from the very poor customer service at the outset it was a nice room and we spent pleasant night.||The breakfast was OK, served in the adjacent hotel in a very attractive well presented and decorated dining room. The croissants not great but, unusually for France quite nice scrambled egg and grilled bacon was on offer. I had to ask for hot milk for my coffee, clearly this was not considered normal, and the coffee itself wasn’t great or particularly hot. Overall, not bad but not really quite worth the money (€95 for the double room €13 person...
Read moreAs mentioned in other reviews, Lyons-la-Foret is a quaint but tiny village, but do not visit on a Wednesday. We enquired about accommodation at the local Tourist Information and were pointed in the direction of Les Lions a short walk away. This was completely closed and so after returning to the tourist information were informed that the sister hotel La Licorne would be able to help. The lady on reception to be fair was helpful enough and walked with me to Les Lions explaining that the restaurant was closed on Wednesdays and if we required breakfast we would need to walk to the Licorne for this. Not a huge problem, but unexpected. ||||Access to the rooms (presumably because the restaurant was closed) was via an external stairway (? fire escape). Once inside we were shown a double room on the corner of the building, reasonable size but the clash of colours and patterns was a bit much. There were some nice pieces of furniture and there were several windows which overlooked the street and buildings opposite but only had half blinds. The cost we thought was very expensive for what you got. I had a look around once the reception lady had left and found that the rooms were still unmade from the previous guests, this was at 5.00 pm, and they were left that way during our stay so obviously no staff on the premises at all on Thursday. ||||Again as mentioned previously there was only one restaurant open, the tables were wedged so close to each other and in a long row. It was impossible not to overhear others conversation and the food and service were mediocre at best. A coach party arrived whilst we were there and it appeared that all service was being given to them and we were an inconvenience.||||Lyons-la-foret is somewhere to have a look around mid day, then move on for an...
Read moreWe had stayed at this hotel twice before. There was a change of ownership at the second visit. Now all has changed for the worse.||||On arrival the hotel was closed. Finally we found we had to visit a sister hotel down the street in order to register. On checking in we were told that we could no longer have breakfast in the hotel we had booked, but must visit the other hotel if we wanted breakfast! Definitely a first. We were also told that the restaurant at our hotel would not be open that night. There was in fact only one other restaurant open in the whole village. This despite the fact or perhaps because of the fact that all three hotels now have the same owner?||||We were taken to our room but immediately asked for a different one as the one offered was smelly. We were put into room number one. Avoid this at all costs! Here are some comments:||||- bed head and foot both torn||- no shelf in bathroom (one had existed - the clips for it were still there but no shelf)||- mould growing in the shower||- only one chair in a double room||- TV and wifi both not working||- only five hangers (only one would hold trousers)||- no shelf space||- no tissues or water||||The next morning we had to walk down the street to the other hotel to pay. At 07.30 here was nobody in reception. Finally, 15 minutes later, following at least two phone calls to a manager (perhaps the owner?) we paid by cash because nobody knew how to use a credit card!||||The restaurant we were forced to use was overpriced and the food badly prepared.||||What more...
