I first came to St. Barths in 2003 and then again with my wife in 2008 as a wedding gift. We loved it so much we promised ourselves a return visit. So after not being able to book the destination of our first choice for our 5th anniversary (2nd honeymoon), my wife suggested St. Barths. I am so glad she did. It is still as beautiful and tranquil as we remember. The first thing that struck us about St. Barths is how clean and organized it is. We returned completely rested after a week in this paradise.||||We initially booked 5 nights in the garden suite, but immediately switched to the ocean view when they told us the upgrade price. We were only required give email confirmation to book our reservation. We arrived on Voyager III Dreamliner (High Speed Catamaran), which I also reviewed positively. Odile met us at the port with the car, a current model Hyundai Getz. We had a suite and car package. ||||We drove along well maintained, roads with steep winding hills, but the views on all sides looking down were breathtaking. Our destination was on the northern side of the island, a sleepy little village called Anse des Flamands. It is about 5 minutes drive from Gustavia, the island's capital. ||||I gazed out from the patio at the amazing 180 degree view of the Atlantic Ocean, just as Odile promised. The suite is well maintained with quality fixtures. My wife used the kitchen to prepare most of the meals when we were not eating out. On our arrival I could not get wifi and he first day there was a slight problem with wifi and someone came to fix it immediately. They have 6 French cable TV channels, and a DVD player, which we did not use. It is equipped with standard French telephone, which we did not need. The grounds look well maintained and it looks quite presentable. ||||The house cleaning service was exceptional. The bedding, towels, hand towels, toiletries, dish cloths were changed daily. We even left our dirty dishes in the sink when we rushed out after breakfast to the beach, only to return to find the dishes washed and put away. The housecleaning staff should be commended on the cleanliness and their attention to detail. Fresh beach towels were laid on every day even when our wet ones were still drying from the day before. ||||Our suite was well equipped with whatever we needed: a griller, oven, toaster, stove top, full size refrigerator with freezer, all cutlery, crockery, plenty of cooking pots and utensils, condiments, cleaning supplies, scourers, it was all there. They supply a weber grill for each suite, so we decided to barbecue for a change. We did not even have to rent beach chairs, because they have 2 beach chairs in the suite to take out with us. ||||Room security is excellent. All the doors are of sturdy construction and have keys and double dead bolt locks that can be locked with keys from both sides, so we could safely leave the gallery open overnight. They also provide a small night safe in the room.||||The U Marche (supermarket) at St Jean airport is not far and we got everything we needed there. They had plenty of fresh produce, and lots to choose from with their house brands. The prices were quite reasonable. The open long hours, even on weekends, which is unusual for the French. ||||We saw an abundance of wildlife, sealife, birdlife; lizards and turtles walking around in the open chomping on the fallen hibiscus flowers. We even had to wait a few minutes to let a huge old turtle cross the road. The locals always stop to let wildlife cross the roads, no matter how small. ||||St. Barths is very environmentally conscious. We saw widespread use of electric cars, which you don't even a license to drive. The locals drive them as normal vehicles, since you can park them just about anywhere. For the 5 days we used just $60 in gas, but how much gas can you use on an 8 sq. mile island? We have never seen traffic jams on previous trips and this was no different, although it is low season now. It shows because you see how the Collectivity maintains the island's infrastructure and protects the environment. If you are interested in environment, the Reserve Naturelle, is body looking after that and it is worth a visit to their center on the Gustavia Port. They have written up boards and maps all over the island that explain the history and guides you around the historic forts, the beaches, and the astonishing viewpoints. They are in French and English, so they are paying attention to English-speaking visitors. We did not really take the tourist route, but its nice to know you can find out all about the island by colorful sign boards.||||We had a great vacation. But we were only looking for peace and quiet after a long day exploring the beaches, and historical sites. We just slept, ate got out early to see the sights. We did not hear any noise while we were there. Maybe the high season is different, but somehow I doubt it. ||||You will need a car to see St. Barths, as Auberge de Terre Neuve is outside the capital, Gustavia. You may see the occasional hollywood celebrity wandering around in Gustavia, as this is the playground for the rich and famous. But you can also have a value for money vacation that does not break the bank if you do a little Internet research first as we did. ||||We will be back...

Read moreThis the BEST accomodation on St. Barth for the economical traveller by far. Nicely rennovated, well maintained and a very friendly host. Gardenview bungalows (#1-6) are 160€ a night for up to 3 people. Bayview villas (#7-10)with double and singlebed are 200€ each. #10 is the best, but prebooked most of the time. But now comes the clincher, what do you need the most on an island without public transportation and no Uber or a cap hire number? A car 🚘 Guess what? It is included in the roomrate as a complimentary add-on. Why? The owner happens to own a large local car rental agency with 110 cars. There are only 10 villas, so book well in advance to grab one of these gems. It is less expansive than Sunset Hotel, Le petit Morne or Auberge de la petite Anse and INCLUDES your own...
