The Wasserburg Anholt is a first class hotel located in a historic castle. The castle has a grand entrance, leading over the moat which surrounds the castle, past guard gates into an enclosed courtyard. Guests enter the hotel from the courtyard, but cars may not be parked there. So after dropping off our luggage, I drove back to a parking lot a short distance outside the moat.||||The hotel rooms are restored and renovated rooms in the castle. We had opted for one of the “theme” rooms, which are larger than the regular rooms. Ours was located in a corner of the second floor and was quite spacious. It had been totally updated and had all the modern conveniences. The marble coated bathroom was a bit tight but had enough space for our toiletries. The shower was modern and water pressure was great.||||Guests should know that the rooms are not air conditioned. We had no problem because the night was cool and we had the windows open, so we enjoyed a wonderful night on the comfortable bed.||||The typical German breakfast, with many selections, is served in the new glass-enclosed dining room overlooking the moat. The breakfast selections include the usual meats, cheeses, smoked fish, cereals and yogurts, as well as scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon. The dining room includes an outdoor seating area (which we could not use because the weather was overcast and drizzly). On a nice day, it would have been glorious to eat breakfast outside, with a view of the moat and...
Read moreHonestly, expectations were low when we arrived at this hotel. The quirky name (Romantik Parkhotel), and previous experiences at half-faded castle hotels, had us check in with a high degree of skepticism - we only chose the hotel as we on short notice had to rearrange a long-awaited booked stay in the Netherlands due to increased Covid-alerts/restrictions there.||How wrong we could be: The Romantik Parkhotel is a jewel! First, the castle is really well kept up. Part of it is a museum, part is hotel, and then there is a great restaurant just on the park waters. Interesting to walk around in the common rooms and take in old world history. Also, the hotel room was comfortable, with a nice garden view. But then tere was the restaurant, that really topped the surpise list: Very high quality, excellent and attentive service, and an impressively deep and broad wine list! We were so happy for this accidental stop-over, and will definitely recommend it as a vantage point for exploring the border areas between Germany and the...
Read moreMy husband and I have enjoyed a long weekend at this hotel and recommend it highly. It’s a class act with castle period decor yet all of the modern conveniences. We started our weekend with a long walk through the extensive gardens that are kept in tip top shape. We had one evening and two breakfasts in the dining room. We are discriminating but can’t say enough about the delicious food and air of sophistication. Yet, we felt comfortable in our casual tourist clothing. The restaurant is all glass facing the gardens with swans, coots, doves and various other birds all around enjoying the canals surrounding the castle. We only wish we had known about this place earlier. It’s like finding a well kept secret. One last point…there is tremendous attention to details with fresh flowers everywhere and delicious homemade snacks and fruit in our...
