Lalibay in Aegina is a newly completed hotel / Spa resort on the Greek island of Aegina. It sits about 6km out of the port of Aegina Town in Aeginitsia on the way to Perdika. Recently renovated in 2020 it sits on the old Mooney Bay site. I have been travelling to Aegina for 22 yrs now and the new owner and his team have done a stunning job and should be proud at what has been achieved. I got talk into a nice chap called Takis who took the time to explain to me what had been done to achieve the current vision.
On arrival the receptionist Maria was very courteous and helpful and spoke excellent English. She escorted me to my room which was a deluxe double with sea view. Entry was by a touch pad - very stylish. She explained all the facilities to me in detail.
The room itself was spacious, clean and very comfortable. It had a nice walk in shower with both a over head and flexible shower head. Robes and slippers were provided with the usual toiletries The bed was an incredibly large double. It was extremely comfortable The TV provided a good international selection of channels as well as displaying the restaurant and Beach bar menus, allowing you to browse. The room had a large walk-in closet with plenty of storage. It also had a large fridge, safe and tea making facilities. I had two very minor observations here, there were only 4 clothes hangers and no coffee or milk to make a hot drink, only tea. Beach towels were provided. The balcony was spacious and offered excellent sea and pool view. The room had excellent adjustable air conditioning to suit your needs. The room was also nice and quiet.
The pool was clean and deep, unusually it was filled with sea water so no heavy smell of chlorine. There were a series of cabanas and luxury sun loungers around the pool - no lifeguard. Although advertised as a “no children allowed”resort, there were children here.
The Beach bar was lovely and afforded stunning views over towards the islands of Moni, Angistri and Methana. Service here was excellent I was served by a young attentive waiter called Spiros. He was extremely polite and courteous. This bar is a great place to watch the sunset. You can also purchase snacks here such as Burgers or Club Sandwiches all reasonably priced.
The beach itself had nice loungers and umbrellas, the sea was a little rocky but had steps down to it - Tip, purchase some swim shoes to protect your feet. Unfortunately due to Greek laws they were unable to alter the beach area.
The spa unfortunately was still closed due to the COVID restrictions but what I could see if it, it looked very nice. I hope to return to use it in the future.
Breakfast and Dinner were served in the Kavos restaurant. The tables and chairs looked fairly basic and cheap considering the market they are aiming for. It would have been nice to see the tables laid properly with linen cloths and napkins.
The dinner menu was fairly simple but the food incredibly tasty. I had the sea bream and it was delicious. It was however a little on the warm side rather than hot. A nice buffet breakfast in the morning with all COVID precautions being taken.
All in all the resort has the makings of a great hotel and with a bit more attention to the small details it will become an excellent resort. I have absolutely no hesitation recommending Lalibay and will certainly stay here again...
Read moreWe just had the chance to stay at LaLiBay Resort & Spa and we had a 5 star experience across the board.
ROOMS: We have had the chance to travel to many countries throughout Europe and Central America and have stayed at resorts - hotels - and airbnbs and we both woke up after the first night saying the same thing... "This is the best guest bed we have ever slept on!" The room size met our expectations. While we have experienced bigger rooms our room was on brand with other rooms we have stayed in throughout Europe. It maximized every inch and it also didn't hurt that we had a great view of the sea and sunsets every night. Modern design and everything was intuitive (ie we didn't have trouble getting access to our electricity, which was actually what we experienced at our last resort while in Greece). In addition to our room, they had an outdoor exercise area which had all the necessary equipment to get a complete workout in. The spa rooms were clean and extremely comforting. The saltwater pool was refreshing for our 90 degree plus days and we had a blast getting some late night swimming in and all the beach and pool chairs/tables/tents met our expectations.
STAFF: We had a seamless check-in. Everyone from the front desk to the restaurant to the beach bar to the spa was very kind and helpful. They went out of their way to accommodate our needs/desires. During checkout the staff were playing music from the band Coldplay and shared how they were headed to Athens for the concert later that night and we happened to be too! We kept saying to each other how impressed we were with how personable all the staff was throughout our time there. Remembering our names, remembering how we specifically liked our coffee in the morning. (Side note Freddo Espresso ... is an incredible caffeinated drink ... reminded me of a Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso from Starbucks sans the oatmilk ... which was nice to taste familiar things when visiting a new place.) One of the restaurant managers gave us a list of their personal favorite spots off the island and everything we tried from their recommendations was excellent and met expectations based off their description. Both massage therapists were extremely kind, generous and professional. We have gotten other spa experiences prior to LaLibay where one of us walked away not as satisfied as the other. This was definitely not the case. If it is available, we both got the Pistachio Candle package AND DEFINITELY RECOMMEND IT!!!
LOCATION: Is ideal for those looking for a greek island experience while still wanting to remain close to Athens/mainland. We loved that the entire resort very easily accessible. The port/village is quaint and had lots of fun little shops. The biggest surprise for us was how affordable everything was if you are going on a...
Read moreDuring a 2-week visit to Greece we spent the first 3 nights here and it was an unforgettable, horrible experience. The air conditioning kept turning itself off overnight and we would wake up in a sweat. We contacted the front desk who sent over someone to check the system (they determined the system was working properly and didn’t fix anything).
The second night it continued happening again and by 02:30am we couldn’t even get the air conditioning to come back on at all so the front desk offered to move us to a different room. The air conditioning in that room came on when we first got there but it also turned completely off automatically. We were moved to a third room for the third night and the same thing happened yet again.
After traveling from 7 time zones away, we really needed to get good sleep to adjust to the time difference but it was impossible to get a good nights rest in a hot.
The rooms had a nice walk-in clothes closet but there was no way to turn on the light and have it stay on while you’re in the closet going through your suitcase. The light worked only when it detected motion and would automatically shut off a few seconds later. I had to constantly wave my arm through the air to cut the light back on which got quite aggravating, especially when trying to function after getting little sleep in a hot room.
The last day we were there, my husband left the room to pack his suitcase into the car and the bathroom light turned off automatically while I was in the middle of taking a shower.
Although the on-site restaurant was amazing, the property was beautiful, and the staff were all kind, the experience was the worst of all the many hotels we stayed at over two weeks due to the automation of air conditioning and lighting.
When we checked out we asked about being given a discount on the room rates due to the malfunctioning air conditioning that kept us too hot to sleep. We were told no.
I really wanted to enjoy a luxurious treat while staying at this beautiful hotel in a gorgeous location, but being able to set a consistent and comfortable room temperature overnight is critically important for good sleep, however, the automated air conditioning shut-down that couldn’t be fixed or manually overridden by guest or staff dampened our stay on the island and prevented us from having energy during the daytime to enjoy exploring and other activities.
I was disappointed in both the experience and for having to pay full rate for rooms that torture you. I would not recommend anyone who requires a consistent room temperature while sleeping to stay...
