The Black Sand Beachhouse — Hotel in Santa Rosa

1… This was a terrible experience, once you’re past the dirty tile, stained sheets, and lack of potable water, you at least expect to get some sleep. There’s a bar right next door that did not stop playing music all night. Our room was right next to it and the music was so loud inside the room, even with ear plugs, you could barely think, nonetheless try to sleep. The music started about 5pm and was still going at 6am when we hurriedly checked out and left. ||There was hotel staff around at night, but they didn’t seem to do much. There was a large party of young women hanging out in the pool with their own music competing for loudest against the bar. The pool officially closed at 9pm, but it was midnight and staff knew but didn’t address the issue. |2… Not hot water, but that’s not an issue. The issue is the tap water is sea water. So even when you’re finished showering, you’re still covered in salt. |3… On the plus side, the AC works well and cooled down the room, but to no avail since sleep wasn’t possible. |4… More generally, Monterrico is not ready for the tourist spotlight. The town seems to be a favorite of the local drunks, who seem to be around every corner, and racing up and down the trash-ridden beach on ATVs. ||If you’re drawn here because the turtles allegedly nest here (which they like to brag about), you will be disappointed. My husband and I traveled to Monterrico to get out of Antigua for a few days of rest and relaxation. We chose Black Sands Beach House and were not disappointed! The room was clean and tidy and the location right on the beach was fantastic! The dipping pool upstairs was a refreshing spot to cool off when the waves were a little too rough. The food was very good and everything was fresh. The main thing I would like to highlight, though, was the AMAZING staff! Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. A particular standout was the bartender, Jesus. I cannot say enough good things about him. He was professional, friendly, and made a fantastic pina colada. It was a terrible night! We arived and there was no wifi while they say there is wifi on google maps. In the evening the water and the airco stopped working. There was also a lot of noise until 1 am. Because the airco did not work and there was a lot of noise I could not sleep until 2 am. Then I found a guy who was cleaning the pool and he saved my night! He was able to repair the airco and the noise stopped so i could finally sleep. Then I woke up at 7 am and our room was full of water. There had been a leakage they said. One of our bags was on the ground an everything in it was soaked. When we complained about everything we did get half of the money back.
