My recent stay at Hotel Royal Castel Gulmarg left me with mixed feelings, primarily due to an unfortunate incident involving their staff. While the property itself was charming with excellent food and amenities, an incident of fraud by one of their employees marred the experience.
During dinner, the assistant manager, Nasir, initially appeared friendly and accommodating. When I inquired about a nearby medical store, he offered his personal car for our convenience since he claimed taxis were unavailable. Grateful for his kindness, we accepted his offer. Little did I know this act of generosity would later be tainted by deceit.
The following morning, as we were leaving the restaurant, another staff member aggressively demanded payment for the cab service we supposedly used the previous night. Bewildered, I clarified that Nasir had offered his car voluntarily, yet the staff member insisted it was his personal cab and not hotel-provided. Nasir, who was nearby, remained silent, exacerbating the confusion.
Upon checkout, I requested the owner's contact information to address the issue, but the reception only provided the General Manager's number. After contacting the GM, he promptly apologized and assured me that appropriate action would be taken against Nasir for his misconduct. Initially reassured by the GM's professionalism and courteousness, our departure was once again interrupted by Nasir, who aggressively confronted us about the alleged cab fare, creating an uncomfortable scene.
Despite the disappointing encounter with Nasir, the hotel's property itself was impressive. The accommodation was comfortable, the food delightful, and the overall ambiance enjoyable. However, the professionalism and integrity of their staff, particularly Nasir's actions, cast a shadow over an otherwise pleasant stay.

My family and I had the pleasure of staying at the Royal Castle Resort in Gulmarg, and I must say, the experience was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the friendly and cooperative reception staff, who made check-in a breeze. Their warm welcome set the tone for what was to be a fantastic stay.
The rooms at Royal Castle Resort were truly commendable. We were delighted to find that they had upgraded us to a suite room in honor of our child's first birthday—a thoughtful gesture that made our stay even more special. The suite was spacious, immaculately clean, and equipped with all the amenities one could need.

Read moreDefinitely avoidable. We stayed here for one night 28th-29th Feb and the experience was horrendous to say the least. Firstly the rooms are very basic and the doors and furniture are dated. Extra bed we ordered was a sofa cum bed (3 ft x 6ft). Food is below par for a hotel that claims to be 4 star property. We took the dinner buffet and It was cold, tasteless and service was very slow. Breakfast was similarly bad. Worryingly, the hotel had a power outage between 4.15 am to 5.30 am and it was pitch dark in the entire property ( I personally walked across the coridor), room heating stopped and even the intercom was not working. When I questioned the staff in the morning, they didn’t even acknowledge that there was an outage and claimed that they have 100% backup. Clearly they were lying.
I also noticed that that smoke detectors were not installed in the rooms. Given that this building uses a lot of wood, it is a disaster waiting to happen.
Finally the hotel is about 2.5 km from Gondola point. In snow season, its very painful. Also the cars cannot reach the hotel entry from gate as there is a steep slope and the hotel staff drag your luggage in the sludge and dirt all the way down and up. My recommendation is to look at an alternate property for your stay. The only positive about the property is the views you get from the rooms. My guess is it would be similar for most properties in Gulmarg given the natural beauty...
