We, a family of three visited Vengurla and stayed at the Mermaid on a weekend in February. Vengurla is a 7 hr drive from Pune - but the lure of the beach, sea food and the lazy life of Konkan was very inviting. We stumbled upon the Mermaid beach resort/homestay through a friend and decided to visit on the spur of a moment. The drive from Pune via Amboli ghat was uneventful and not too tiring as the roads are pretty good even after you go off the national highway. ||We reached Vengurla around 5pm and checked into the Mermaid. The place is a quaint beach facing resort with a very welcoming and homely atmosphere. The staff is typical Konkani who, after a couple of conversations, treat you like a personal guest enquiring about your preferences before every meal. Sagareshwar beach, a 2 min walk from the resort, is pristine white sand and a walk in the mornings on the cool sands is refreshing. There are shacks on the beach with a few benches to relax. The crowd is minimal (we saw not more than 5-10 people on the beach) and stretches for a couple of kilometres. ||A few rooms have a beach view and we could hear the ocean in the early mornings. The rooms, while clean, could do with an upgrade in terms of the decor. There is good outdoor seating for meals, so you can hear the waves lashing nearby as you dine on the local delicacies. ||Surprisingly, there were no mosquitoes or other insects. The courtyard is big enough and has soft fine beach sand which makes walking and playing (cricket in our case) fun. ||The food is absolutely fantastic, local cuisine with the freshest fish you could get. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, the staff is very attentive and would ask for any preferences - we had the yummiest ghavan (type of local crepes) with coconut chutney one day, kanda poha the next for breakfast. There was also omelet bread with tea, coffee. Lunch and dinner were lip smacking Kombdi Wade (chicken curry with multi grain/lentil puri), fish fry, prawns curry and fried prawns, crab curry and small but very fresh and yummy pomfret fry. The taste is authentic local fare of the Sindhudurg/Malvan area. ||The Mermaid does not serve alcohol but you are free to bring your own and they will serve nice pakodas, prawn fry, masala papad, etc. We found that sitting in the sandy courtyard of the Mermaid sipping a drink under the starry skies is a very relaxing experience!||We visited the Vengurla lighthouse which is a short 10 minute drive from the Mermaid and was a fun visit for all three of us. We also went into the town and had the "cocktail" ice cream sunday at a local ice cream parlour. The town is small and has its own charm. Vengurla is just an hour's drive from Goa and there are a number of other beaches around if you have time on hand to visit places. ||The Mermaid is the perfect weekend gateway for families and also has facilities to host small...
Read moreLocation is excellent. No cleanliness and lack of service. poor amenities like furniture , bed was making lot of noise. First floor room is having table fan which is attached to ceiling and which is very small and with less speed. Such fan is not sufficient in the afternoon especially when the afternoons are hotter. On the third day we had to tell the staff to clean the lobby and the room. Otherwise the staff is busy with their phones. No intercom facility. So you have shout or go down for any requirements. Food is nerve served hot. When told to serve rice later but always got in the the thali first only . Tea is served directly in the cups and not got in the thermos flask. Once ordered tomato omelet it was horrible. Overall food quality is not great. Local Ghavane were made very thick. In prawn s thali lot of coconut was put in the gravy. So ultimately decided to have the food outside. There is Golvan beach resort near by, they often put loud music late night so you will not get good sleep and this is biggest drawback. Last year when visited had noticed the room was given to couple on...
Read moreMermaid resort is located facing Sagareshwar beach near Vengurla.||Beach is beautiful and relatively clean. The beach and consequently the hotel are a bit isolated from Vengurla town and the main road. The small alley leading to the hotel is narrow.||Hotel is a small one storey structure and offers excellent sea views. Room was small but should be OK for couples or solo travellers. Third member will be a very tight squeeze. Both room and toilet were clean and well maintained.||The balcony is more of a small wooden platform and not much useful. However, the window is big enough to offer excellent views and keep the room airy. ||If you go in any time other than winter, opt for AC. The ceiling fan was small and not much powerful, could barely provide enough cooling in January.||There is good seating space outside the rooms and in the garden too where you can sit and enjoy your drinks and meals.||Service was very prompt, personalised Staff was polite and seemed eager to help.||I would recommend this place if you are OK to stay away from the town on...
