The hotel was clean, modern, and safe, and I would feel comfortable staying here again.
Highlights:
Modern finishes, clean rooms, and while small, quite space efficient. Beds were super comfortable.
It is well located about 15 minutes by tuk tuk (about 100 INR ride) to all of the main attractions like Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and The Partition Museum. Easily accessible by Uber too for cheap airport transfers.
Manpreet, one of the servers at the restaurant, was exceptional. She reminded me much of my Punjabi grandmother, each meal telling me “You will try this?” or “That’s too heavy, I can bring that to you for dinner tonight.” She helped me get a sampling of the local cuisine and was always smiling and attentive.
Mr. Singh, one of the duty managers, was also extremely helpful.
Mr. Ashok and Anil went truly above and beyond to help me when I explained that I had bought more clothing than I had room for in my luggage, with six more weeks of travel ahead of me. At 12:30 am, they came into my room, collected the items, and arranged a courier to have it shipped for me so I wouldn’t have to carry all of the excess luggage for another 6 weeks of travel. When I thanked them profusely, Mr. Ashok said, matter of factly, “sir, this is our duty.”
Points of improvement:
Much of the wait staff was very inattentive, and beyond Manpreet, the restaurant service (despite great food) was second class at best for a four star hotel. Place mats were dirty and uncleaned day after day. Requesting a bowl took ten minutes and three reminders from one waiter. Despite 3-4 staff standing around chatting, bowls and plates would often pile up with no offer to clear them. At one point at breakfast, after setting all my stuff and my food down, then getting up to grab a coffee, I came back to find a little kid (probably 7-8 years old) laying in my booth watching YouTube videos. Noticing my discomfort (and confusion, really) — rather than the telling the inattentive parents to come retrieve their child — the waiter told me to relocate myself and my food to another table (without offering to help me move). I thought this was very inappropriate.
As a foreigner traveling to a 4-star business hotel, conversational English felt substantially below the mark. Making basic requests was very difficult and resulted in having to have a manager come to my room to help interpret, twice, and even then, Google Translate still had to be used.
With stronger emphasis on improving the service standard in the restaurant, and by having available a duty manager that is at least basically conversationally fluent in English at all times, I feel this hotel would truly live up to its brand name and to the standards expected of a four star hotel for business travelers.
At the moment, the hotel feels a bit more like an elevated 3-star hotel (by an international / Western traveler standards), but it still offers great food, comfort, cleanliness, modern finishes, and a majority of staff who are eager to help. I hope that my feedback is taken constructively. Despite the areas for improvement, I would stay here again...
Read moreI recently stayed at Golden Sarovar Portico, Amritsar, located on Maa Durga Mandir Road, Mall Road, Amritsar, Punjab. While the property looks appealing from the outside and is situated in a fairly convenient area near the Golden Temple (around 10–15 minutes by car) and other popular attractions like Jallianwala Bagh and Partition Museum, my actual stay was very disappointing.
Location & Nearby Attractions: The hotel is positioned in a central part of Amritsar, making it easy to access key landmarks. The Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, and local shopping markets are not too far. However, despite the good location, the experience inside the hotel overshadows these positives.
Room & Facilities: The rooms are average in comfort, but the basic facilities are not managed properly. One major issue I faced was the lack of parking facilities. For a property of this size, not offering proper parking arrangements is a huge inconvenience, especially for travelers arriving with family or luggage.
Service Experience: This is where the hotel truly failed during my stay. The guest service is extremely poor and lazy. I was thirsty throughout the night and called the reception 2–3 times during the night and 2 times in the morning just to get a bottle of water delivered to my room. Shockingly, no one ever came with water. For a hotel that advertises itself as premium, this level of service is unacceptable.
Basic hospitality means attending to a guest’s urgent needs promptly—something as simple as drinking water should never be ignored. Unfortunately, the staff here seems careless and unresponsive, which left me frustrated and uncomfortable during my entire stay.
Overall Impression: Golden Sarovar Portico might have a decent location in Amritsar, but the terrible service, unavailability of even the most basic facilities like water delivery, and the lack of parking make it a poor choice for travelers. The management seriously needs to improve guest services and staff...
