We were passing the Stelvio Pass and when already on the top, we decided to spend a night there. We found through Booking.com that this hotel had free rooms. We didn't book it through Booking, but we entered the hotel and made a reservation in the hotel directly. The receptionist looked a bit inattentive and her mind was somewhere else when se checked us in. We also asked where we can dine around the hotel and how long the restaurants are open. She only recommended their own restaurant, even though we had noticed another restaurant on the edge of the mountain, we described it and asked how can we access it and how long is it open. She didn't understand which place we were talking about and started telling us that the cable cars are already closed and the restaurant up the mountain is also closed and we can't access it and we can eat in their own restaurant. The restaurant WE were talking about was just about a km away from the hotel and accessible by the car, as we later discovered, but it was already closing when we got there, so we had to dine in the hotel's restaurant. ||We got a small room on the third floor with a view over the parking lot. The bed was nicely hard, as I prefer hard mattraces! There was also a nice warm blanket! The bathroom was tiny with a broken toilet seat that slipped off the toilet whenever you sat on it. The shower was not ok - it started to collect water because there was a rubber base wich hindered the water to flow away. I was frozen of the cold weather outside and I wanted to warm up myself with some hot shower. So when I was all finished, washed and warmed up and when I opened the shower's doors, I discovered that half of the bathroom was flooded! I started to dry up the floor with the foot towel, and when it got wet it started to smell as it had never been washed! The bathroom did not have any other ventilation but a window! If you open it, the bathroom gets cold and your towel does not dry! If you don't open it, all the moisture and humidity stays in the bathroom and spreads into your room too and the towels don't dry! So either way you end up with damp towels! ||Like I already said we also dined in the hotel's restaurant and I wouldn't call it a nice experience. We were waitered by the lady of the house and her second daughter (the first one was the receptionist). The food was average and not enough - I felt hungry after my lasagna portion. We ordered water, but they forgot to bring it to us. And I didn't like the lady of the house - she was intrusive. She tried to chat with us even when we tried to hint her that we don't want to chat with her. When she heard where we are from (Estonia), she instantly thought that we were russians and tried to speak russian words to us. When I explained her we are estonians, she surprisedly asked "well don't you speak russian there?!". And when I said we have our own language, she just grinned. Not a nice behaviour. When we ordered wine, she instantly and irreverently started to advertise her new wine that she produces herself by bringing us a used wine cork to sniff it! ||The breakfast was rather ok for a 3 star hotel - it had more varieties than you can usually find in 3 star hotels in Italy. ||When we started the check out, the lady of the house was at the desk and she had all the time in the world doing stuff in the computer in another room while we were standing by the reception and waiting for her to finish her business in the computer. ||So alltogether I'd say it has it's ups and downs and sadly the down sides makes me think that 76€ for one night is way too expencive for this oldfashioned hotel from the 80's. The staff is weird in my opinion - the lady of the house acts like a dame and her daughters at the same time are sloppy and messy. The hotel is controversial and left me confused. I'd rather not stay there again, but if I had no other choice then I would, but I would dine somewhere else and not there. And I would avoid the staff as much...
Read moreI don’t normally leave hotel reviews, but I wanted to give this spot some positive feedback. I had a great experience during my stay there, and the price was nothing short of perfect for my needs.
Originally, I had not intended to do more than sleep here, but I found the staff (certainly appeared to be family owned) warm, welcoming, and helpful. After a later than anticipated check-in, I went down to the bar for a pizza and a glass of wine, and had a nice table next to the fireplace.
The location is perfect. Situated at the top of the Stelvio Pass, it gives you ease access to the pass in both directions, as well as the Umbrail Pass towards Switzerland. Even though the rooms were a little outdated with a small CRT television, they are more than adequate (the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars). The beds were super soft and I had zero intention of watching television while I was there. It was also enjoyable to have a private bathroom with a shower.
One thing that really won me over is that the staff was patient with my less than perfect Italian, and were helpful even when I had trouble finding the correct words. I will most definitely return, and next time I will be bringing friends with me.
Thank you, Hotel Genziana, for a wonderful stay. Don’t change a...
Read moreFrom the outside, one part of this hotel, (an extension at some point in the past), looked a little plain and perhaps not so inviting but the older/main part of the building where the entrance is well made up for this. The bar area is very welcoming with a lovely fire which would be great to sit around in the winter! The restaurant area was also really nice too. The staff did not speak a huge amount of English but we muddled by between us and they were all very friendly and helpful. We went with their recommendations at dinner in the evening and were not disappointed! It was a very interesting meal and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience! ||Our room was in the older part of the hotel and we had a lovely view out of our window across the mountains! ||The room was fairly small but manageable. It was cosy and clean with a good en-suite bathroom. Thank you to all at the Hotel Genziana for making our one night stay so enjoyable...
