An unforgettable stay at Cala Caterina – truly a hidden gem!

We had the most wonderful experience at Cała Caterina. From the moment we arrived, everything was impeccable. The cleanliness was outstanding — our room was spotless, and housekeeping changed the bed linen every single day. In the evenings, we were delighted to find little chocolates left on our pillows — such a sweet and thoughtful touch that made us feel so welcome.

The hotel restaurant exceeded all expectations. The dinner menu was varied and refined — not a single dish repeated during the entire week! It truly felt like a delightful culinary journey, exploring different tastes each evening.

Another highlight was the live music in the evenings — it added a romantic and relaxing atmosphere to the entire experience. The hotel’s garden and grounds are beautifully maintained — lush, green, and incredibly peaceful.

A special mention goes to the reception staff — the girls at the front desk were warm, professional, and incredibly helpful. Our flight was scheduled for the evening, and although the official check-out time was 10:00 am, they kindly allowed us to stay in our room until after lunch — which we deeply appreciated.

Overall, the hotel is simply stunning — elegant, serene, and truly dedicated to guest comfort.

That said, there are just a few areas where improvement would make the stay absolutely perfect: It would be wonderful if smoking near the pool and on the sun loungers were not allowed. It was sometimes difficult to enjoy the fresh air when someone nearby was smoking. We were a bit disappointed that the hammocks, which were shown in earlier photos of the hotel, were no longer available. Adding a few hammocks or even a small swing for children would make a big difference — especially since many couples with young children were staying at the hotel. Lastly, the language barrier in the restaurant caused a bit of delay. Since most of the restaurant staff did not speak English, we often had to wait up to 40 minutes for an English-speaking waiter to become available and take our order.

The room allocated (sea view junior suite which apparently is unique in the hotel and so we could not be allocated a different one!!!) is unique for the wrong reasons: the shower kept leaking out in the bathroom for nearly a week into our stay ne the staff kept claiming it was ‘fixed’ and it was ‘working’ until we forced the manager to see for himself that the shower was leaking after a bear 2 minutes use (us being a family of 4!!!!). With our stuff in the bathroom, they removed the whole shower cabin and drilled a hole in the ground to allow water to drain 🙈!!! Room not made up on time, beds not changed for a week!! And upon complaint, the duvet left bare, undressed!!! The restaurant staff is really unprepared (with some exceptions: the veteran staff who evidently have been doing this for several years and knew their job, only that they were 2 or 3 out of 10/12!!), no manners whatsoever, not interested in the job and completely absent very often. It appeared as if they were doing us a great favour for the entire stay! clearing the table of empty plates was something which they refused to do ‘naturally’, so in every occasion (breakfast or dinner) we had to pile the dirty plates in order to allow us to finish our meals. Not to mention our family friends’ saga, where their Booking.com reservation did not appear in their system and they have to keep moving from room to room during their 2 weeks’ stay, as the hotel is so extremely busy apparently (not on Booking.com apparently, as rooms kept showing as available) and everything is fully booked and so we can’t be accommodated properly…. Very dissatisfied all together, would not recommend! Do your homework before deciding to spend the money this hotel is asking for! Apart from the lovely grounds they were blessed with and the vicinity of the sea, there is nothing who will make your stay...

Das Cala Catarina ist ein 4*s Hotel. Es handelt sich um ein kleines Hotel mit eigenem Badestrand, kleinem Pool, schönem Garten, Restaurant und zumindest in der Nebensaison kostenfreiem Parkplatz. Das Hotel liegt quasi am Ende einer Halbinsel. Ein Mietwagen oder eigenes Fahrzeug sind jedenfalls sinnvoll. Es liegt aber an sich gut, da einige Stände zu Fuss erreichbar sind und die Landschaft sehr schön ist.

Unsere Anreise im Leihwagen war etwa holprig, da wir das Hotel erst nach einiger Zeit finden konnten. Das hängt damit zusammen, dass wir Abends anreisten und die Zufahrtsstrasse zum Hotel nur teilweise beleuchtet war. In der ersten Nacht gab es auch einen offensichtlich ungewöhnlich starken Sturm, der unser Zimmer im ersten Stock leicht unter Wasser setzte da die Türabdichtung zum Balkon offenbar nicht ganz optimal ausgeführt wurde. Die Wassereintritte scheinen dabei mehrere Zimmer betroffen zu haben. So überraschend das für alle Beteiligten war, so gut konnte man in der Problembehebung die Stärke des Teams und der ganzen Hotelmannschaft beobachten. Das Wasser wurde binnen kürzester Zeit aufgewischt und die Feuchtigkeit behoben. Die Rezeption, Housekeeping und Führungspersonal haben die außergewöhnliche Herausforderung mit Ruhe und hoher Professionalität gemeistert. Das hat mir sehr gut gefallen, da es für ein starkes Team spricht.

Der positive Eindruck hat sich während unseres Aufenthaltes gefestigt. Die Zimmer wurden mit grosser Sorgfalt gereinigt. Die Betten in Perfektion gemacht (offenbar war die zuständige Person früher in der Militärakademie tätig). Die Matratzen sind etwas hart, aber gut. Die Zimmer sind etwas hellhörig, aber das ist in vielen italienischen Beherbergungsbetrieben so. Zudem ist Italien insgesamt von der Mentalität etwas lebendiger.

Das Frühstück ist mit Obst, Wurst, Käse, Marmeladen, Honig, Kuchen und frischen Säften sehr gut. Interessant ist, dass die Marmeladen und Honig aus Deutschland stammen. Nicht, dass das qualitativ schlechter wäre. Es ist aber ungewöhnlich, da Regionalität auch wichtig ist. Wer fährt nach Italien um deutschen Honig zu essen? Ähnlich ist es auch mit den Eiern. Es gibt keinen Hknweis woher die Eier kommen. Das wird im alpenländischen Raum deutlich intensiver zelebriert.

Den Cafe Americano sollte man auslassen und gleich beim Espresso bleiben. Die Kellner sind auch kurz vor Saisonende freundlich, motiviert und gelegentlich zu Scherzen aufgelegt. Auch hier ein tolles Team.

Kleine Kritikpunkte von den Frühaufstehern und Frühschlafengehern. Frühstück beginnt um 8.00. Abendessen um 20.00. Bei beiden würde ich mir in der Nebensaison (Wanderer und Radfahrer) eine Stunde früher wünschen.

Es gibt auch eine tolle Dampfsauna, die man zeitlich bei der Rezeption reserviert. Der Weg zur Dampfsauna bräuchte am Abend noch etwas Licht entlang des Weges, da recht finster.

Fazit: Ich und meine Frau haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt. Alle Mitarbeiter von der Reinigung Poolservice, Kellner hin zur Rezeption, der Dame die am Abend nachfragt, ob noch etwas benötigt wird, waren sehr herzlich und sehr freundlich. Dusche, Bett, Frühstück passt. Wir haben uns sehr hier wirklich im positiven Sinne zu Hause gefühlt. Tolles Ambiente, tolles Team....
