You'll read plenty of rave reviews of the Maddalena Islands - a paradise of sun and sea etc etc. The place lives up to the hype. Even in the frenzy of mid August, the archipelago has this weird ability to absorb the crowds, which are substantial, and still have plenty of little nooks, crannies, bays and and rocky inlets left over for you to enjoy with the feeling that you're somehow alone in a wild place. It reminded us of the Scottish Hebrides, Mediterranean style, with blue blue warm water, plenty of sun and little islands interspersed with sea stretching off to the horizon, with the mountains of Corsica providing a grand backdrop in the distance. ||||Camping Maddalena was a perfect base from which to enjoy it all. Nestled around a 200 year old farmhouse, where the main bar and restaurant are located, the site has the feel of a village - quiet, unpretentious, secluded. We stayed in one of the little Tukul huts, with bathroom and shower, which was perfect for our needs (two adults and a child). We were provided with a fridge, a little table top stove and a few cooking utensils, which were enough for us to cook an evening meal with food bought at the nearby supermarket (just 400 metres south of the camp site). A suggestion, rather than a criticism: a set of plates, cutlery, glasses, bowls etc would have been welcome (we had to buy some cheap stuff in the local hardware store). We wouldn't have minded paying a small deposit for the use of them, reimbursable on departure. ||||The restaurant serves a very good pizza, and there are also impromptu gigs, and talks to keep you entertained. It was an easy place to meet other campers. Not that you have to engage with all of that if you don't want to. It's all very laissez-faire. The main town is a five minute drive away, and the beautiful island of Caprera is not more than a ten minute drive. La Maddalena is the kind of place where you can go for a two week holiday and visit a different beach, cove, rocky outcrop, every day. In that sense, it's magical. ||||Thanks to Emilio and his crew for making us feel so welcome. We'll...
Read moreThe camp and their people were nice, but it was the location that killed it a little. We walked 45 minutes to center, also there was no beach near the camp... To the first one was 15 minutes walking and it was all rocks and small and nowhere to put your towel. We barely swam there... Or when I think again, we didnt swim at all! Actually no beach there!||Otherwise, the bungalow where we stayed was okay, we also negotiated the price. The guy on the phone asked us where do we come from, we told its Slovenia, so he knew we come from a screwed place and dropped the price. :)) + we got small breakfast, croissant and coffee (this one was to throw up, but the waitress was very kind, so we...
