Yay, first english speaking review!||||I stayed here on a week long spring trip to north Italy. While the temperature was high when arriving at Castelrotto centre (around 30°C), this did not pose a problem, as temperatures dropped somewhat, and evening/night time was quite cool. The hotel itself is in a very quiet but somewhat uncentral location - yet it is perfect if this is what you seek. It has amazing views over the valley, the mountains on the other side, as well as the Sciliar/Schlern massif, which towers some 1200 m above the hotel. The only neighbours in the area are a couple of farms, and the only 'noise' you will hear are either crickets chirping happily, sheep, or the occasional cow of a rooster.||||The staff mostly consists of the family running the hotel, and some extras - and they are wonderful and hospitable hosts! English poses no problem either, so they are (at least) trilingual.||||Rooms are of a very high standard - I stayed in a Schlern room, which was 40 sqm - very roomy, with a separate sitting area, big balcony facing the valley, and a huge bathroom with a - hooay - walk-in-shower instead of a bathtub! The only gripe must be the very small TV set - although I normally don't watch much when I am travelling, but this was an exception with both the French open tennis tournament as well as the Giro d'Italia at the same time.||||The hotel provides B&B as well as half pension - breakfast is a very good selection, and dinner is a set menu for every evening - not unnormal for where I come from either. We chose to dine at the hotel every night in order to save the hassle of driving or walking to Castelrotto - and at 10 EUR per person per night it is a steal! Plus the local wine from Kaltern/Caldara (just south of Bolzano) was very good :)||||Now for the sightseeing/experience possibilities - there is a lot to choose from! Having only 3 days at our disposal, a careful selection had to be made, but if the weather is good, you really can't afford to miss out on the Alpe di Siusi/Seiseralm area. Drive down to the valley station in Siusi/Seis (free parking), take the gondola up to Compaccio/Compatsch, and pick and choose from a wide range of walking possibilities. There are a couple of bus services here too, so it is possible to walk one way and then take the bus back.||Another option is driving across a streak of mountain passes, possibly all the way to Cortina d'Ampezzo (Misurina/Tre Cime) or do a roundtrip with five passes (recommended route: Castelrotto - Val Gardena - Passo Gardena - Passo Valparolo - Passo Falzarego - Passo Pordoi - Passo Sella), and don't miss out on a walk to the 'city of stones' in front of the amazing Sassolungo/Lankofel massif.||Other possibilities include a walk to a couple of castle ruins, the Laghetto di Fié, or dropping by either Bressanone or Bolzano for a visit of the old town parts. Bolzano houses the famous mummy Ötzi by the way (not DJ).||||All in all, this place is simply wonderful! On a possible return to the Dolomites - I know where to stay! And at 53 EUR per person per night for half board with a 40 square metre room - you...
Read moreWe wanted to stay in the village, but the hotels that interested us were booked. We identified Plunger by the reviews on TripAdvisor. It turned out to be quite nice, and reasonably priced. We were tired upon arrival, having flown in overseas to Milan, then driving. The owner, Martin, gave us our access card and we retired for the night, checking in in the morning, which was quite nice of him. The hotel is exceptionally clean. Breakfast is well appointed with typical breads, meats, cheeses, cereals, yogurt and fruit. There were no eggs. ||||I don't think the hotel touts its services as well as it should. The lowest level is the spa floor. We were expecting a hot tub and sauna. What we found was a whirlpool room with a beautiful vie of the mountains, and chaise seating. Off this large room are a dry sauna, Finnish sauna, and steam room. Sowers are available. I saw a massage room, but did not inquire of the services. The hotel will give you a free pass to the ski chair lift. We hiked down to the village, about a 20 minute walk, took the chair lift up, and hiked down to the hotel, about a 15 minute walk. This way the hiking was down hill, but still a good exercise due to the steepness of much of the trail, through meadow and forest. The hot tub was a nice retreat after the hike.||||Dinner is served with a nice salad bar, and a pre selected three courses of pasta, meat with rice, and ice cream. We had dinner at the hotel only once, and chose to try out different restaurants in town. Not the the dinner at Plunger was bad, but we wanted more variety.||||I can say nothing negative about our experience. It is not luxurious, but is of high quality. It is evident the owners work very hard to present a...
